Ayodhya – Rama Janmabhoomi, the birthplace of Lord Rama – is one of the seven Mukti Kshetras of Hinduism. Since the consecration of Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir on 22 January 2024, it has become one of the most visited cities in North India, drawing over 100,000 pilgrims on peak days. The city’s sacred sites cluster within a remarkably compact 5 km radius – making a structured, unhurried visit to all major places possible in a well-planned day.

I am Gurudutt, born and raised in Braj Bhoomi and the founder of Experience My India. Since 2018, I have guided 50,000+ pilgrims through every Ayodhya site in this guide – including many who arrived without knowing where to go first or that Hanuman Garhi must come before Ram Mandir. This guide gives you the complete list of places to visit in Ayodhya with every practical detail. See our Ayodhya Varanasi Tour Package or message WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Why Ayodhya Is a Must-Visit Pilgrimage City

Ayodhya is described in the Valmiki Ramayana as the capital of the Ikshvaku dynasty – the Sun dynasty (Surya Vansha) to which Lord Rama belonged. The city’s name means “that which cannot be conquered” in Sanskrit. It is one of the seven Mukti Kshetras (liberation cities) in Hinduism, along with Mathura, Haridwar, Varanasi, Kanchipuram, Ujjain and Dwarka.

What makes Ayodhya particularly significant now is the Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir – a temple that took decades of legal and political process to build, finally consecrated on 22 January 2024. For hundreds of millions of Hindus, this temple represents the restoration of a sacred site of the deepest importance. The experience of visiting Ram Lalla – the infant form of Lord Rama – at his actual birthplace is distinct from any other pilgrimage experience in India.

Ground Truth – What Nobody Tells You About Places to Visit in Ayodhya

1. Most pilgrims visit Ram Mandir and leave – missing Kanak Bhawan at 300 metres, which takes 30 minutes and has a tenth of the crowd. The 5-minute walk from Ram Mandir to Kanak Bhawan is one of the most rewarded short walks in Ayodhya pilgrimage. Experience My India has never had a pilgrim visit Kanak Bhawan and not describe it as one of Ayodhya’s highlights.

2. The Ram Mandir cloakroom on a busy day takes 20-30 minutes – most visitors don’t factor this into their schedule. Arriving at Ram Mandir at 7:00 AM, spending 25 minutes at cloakroom and joining the darshan queue at 7:25 AM is still fine – but plan for it. Experience My India builds cloakroom time into every schedule.

3. The Faizabad Nawabi heritage (Gulab Bari, Bahu Begum Tomb) is extraordinary and takes only 15 minutes from Ram Mandir by auto – almost no Ayodhya tour includes it. The Bahu Begum Tomb is considered by architectural historians to be among UP’s finest Nawabi monuments. Almost zero pilgrims know it exists. Experience My India includes it in all 2-day+ Ayodhya packages.

4. Guptar Ghat at sunrise (9 km, 20 min by auto) has the most contemplative atmosphere of any site in Ayodhya – quieter than anywhere in the city. Most pilgrims spend all their time in the dense central 1 km around Ram Mandir. Guptar Ghat, 9 km away, where Rama took his final departure, is a completely different experience. Experience My India includes it in extended packages.

5. The Ayodhya Parikrama (Panchkosi – 15 km on Kartik Ekadashi) is among the most spiritually significant experiences in all of North India – and almost no travel guide mentions it. The Panchkosi Parikrama on Kartik Ekadashi draws 200,000+ pilgrims circumambulating the inner sacred boundary of Ayodhya. Experience My India guides this every year.
