Lord Ram’s City to Lord Krishna’s City – 1,768 Kilometres Apart

Ayodhya and Dwarka are both among the seven most sacred cities in Hinduism – the Sapta Puri. Ayodhya is the birthplace of Lord Ram; Dwarka was the city Lord Krishna established after leaving Mathura, ruling from there as the king of the Yadavas until it submerged into the sea.

For pilgrims who want to complete the Sapta Puri pilgrimage or simply connect these two pilgrimage cities in one journey, the Ayodhya to Dwarka route presents a genuine logistical challenge. At approximately 1,768 km by road, this is not a day’s journey by any mode. Understanding the options clearly – flight with connection, direct train, long road trip – saves both time and money.

I am Gurudutt, born and raised in Braj Bhoomi and founder of Experience My India. Since 2018, our team has guided over 50,000 pilgrims through Uttar Pradesh’s sacred cities. This guide gives you verified distances, travel times and specific transport options for the Ayodhya to Dwarka journey.

Somnath and Dwarka – Combined Gujarat Pilgrimage

Dwarka and Somnath are both located on the Gujarat coastline and are both among India’s most significant Vaishnav and Shaiva pilgrimage sites. Many pilgrims who travel from Ayodhya to Dwarka extend their trip to include Somnath.

Somnath’s significance: One of the 12 Jyotirlingas – the most sacred Shiva temples in India – Somnath is a natural addition to a Dwarka visit. The combined Gujarat pilgrimage (Dwarka → Somnath) is increasingly popular as a 3-4 day Gujarat circuit.

Ground Truth – What Nobody Tells You About the Ayodhya to Dwarka Journey

After planning pilgrimage circuits across India since 2018 for 50,000+ pilgrims, here is what Experience My India knows about this specific journey that most travel guides will not say:

The road distance of 1,768 km is not a “road trip” in the casual sense – it is a multi-day drive commitment. Numerous travel sites list the route as “approximately 1,768 km” with a single travel time figure. In practice, comfortable pilgrimage road travel does not exceed 8-9 hours driving per day. This makes the Ayodhya-Dwarka road journey a minimum 3-day commitment with overnight stays in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. Any description of it as a single-day drive is inaccurate.

Jamnagar Airport (JGA) is the correct airport to fly into, not Ahmedabad. Many travelers fly Ayodhya → Ahmedabad and then face the unexpected additional 4-5 hour road to Dwarka. The correct second leg is Ahmedabad → Jamnagar by flight (1 hour), then Jamnagar → Dwarka by road (130 km, 2 hours). The total is still 8-9 hours but far better than the 9-11 hours that Ahmedabad → Dwarka road creates.

The Guwahati-Okha Dwarka Express runs only once a week. If your travel dates do not align with the specific running day, you cannot take the direct train. The alternative is Lucknow to Ahmedabad (various trains) and then Gujarat into Dwarka – a 2-train journey that adds complexity and transfer time.

Somnath and Dwarka are 250 km apart on the Gujarat coast – close enough to combine but not on the same day. Both sites require meaningful time – Dwarkadheesh Temple needs 2-3 hours for complete darshan and Somnath needs similar. The practical Gujarat circuit is Dwarka (Day 1) → drive to Somnath (4-5 hours, Day 2) → Somnath darshan + departure. Experience My India advises 3-4 days in Gujarat for this combination.
