Why Varanasi Is the Best Base for Eastern UP and Bihar Sightseeing

Varanasi – Kashi – is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities and the most sacred city in Hinduism for Shaivites. But beyond Varanasi’s own 84 ghats, Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Dashashwamedh Ganga Aarti, the city sits at the intersection of one of the most historically and spiritually dense regions on earth.

Within 250 km of Varanasi: the site of Buddha’s first sermon (Sarnath, 10 km), the confluence of three sacred rivers (Prayagraj, 120 km), the birthplace of Lord Ram (Ayodhya, 200 km), the site of Buddha’s enlightenment (Bodh Gaya, 250 km in Bihar), a major Shakti Peeth (Vindhyachal, 70 km), an 18th-century fort museum (Ramnagar, 14 km) and multiple natural waterfalls in the Vindhya hills (40-48 km). No city in eastern India offers day-trip and weekend options of this density and diversity.

I am Gurudutt, founder of Experience My India, born and raised in Braj Bhoomi and guiding pilgrims since 2018. I have taken more than 50,000 pilgrims through Varanasi and its surrounding region – from the Sarnath Buddhist circuit to the Ayodhya-Varanasi combined tour. In this guide you will find all 15 best places to visit near Varanasi in 2026 – with exact distances, travel times, entry fees and the best touring sequence. Call +91-7302265809. Which Hill Station Is Nearest to Varanasi?

There is no conventional “hill station” (in the Mussoorie / Ooty / Shimla sense) close to Varanasi. The geography of eastern Uttar Pradesh is the Gangetic Plain – flat and riverine. However, the nearest elevated terrain with cooler conditions is in the Vindhya range to the south, which forms the backdrop for sites like Vindham Falls, Lakhaniya Dari and Vindhyachal.

“Hill Station” OptionDistanceWhat It IsNotes
Vindhya hills (Mirzapur / Chandauli area)40-70 kmLow hills, 300-400 metres elevation; seasonal waterfallsCooler than the plain; not a tourist hill station
Kaimur hills (near Robertsganj)90-100 kmPart of the Vindhyan range; forest and hill terrainLimited infrastructure; wilderness visitors
Chunar35 kmSandstone hillock fort above the GangaNot a hill station – a heritage site with elevation
Nearest true hill stationMirzapur district hillsNone with developed tourism infrastructureVaranasi visitors typically go to Manali / Rishikesh as hill station destinations – 800-1,000 km away

Bottom line: There is no hill station near Varanasi in the conventional sense. The Vindhya foothills (40-70 km south) offer cooler, greener terrain and seasonal waterfalls – but not a temperature refuge. Experience My India can suggest the best nature excursions from Varanasi based on the season. Call +91-7302265809.

What Nobody Tells You About Varanasi Day Trips

After coordinating Varanasi region excursions for more than 50,000 pilgrims since 2018, here is what I – Gurudutt, founder of Experience My India – share privately before every trip:

Sarnath is a dedicated half-day that cannot be squeezed into a full Varanasi city day. Many tourists try to do Kashi Vishwanath, all of Varanasi’s ghats and Sarnath in a single day – and none of them get enough time at Sarnath. The Sarnath Museum alone (with the original Ashoka Lion Capital) warrants 45-60 minutes. The Dhamek Stupa grounds need another 30-45 minutes. Experience My India always puts Sarnath on a dedicated Day 2.

The Sarnath Museum closes on Fridays. This is the museum that houses the Ashoka Pillar Lion Capital – the national emblem of India. If you plan Sarnath on a Friday, you will find the museum closed. Experience My India automatically checks the day of the week before scheduling Sarnath.

Prayagraj to Varanasi by road takes 2.5-3 hours on NH-19 – but the Ganga express trains take only 2 hours. For a day trip to Prayagraj from Varanasi, the train is faster and more comfortable than the cab, particularly on weekends when road traffic is heavier. Experience My India books the train for Prayagraj excursions whenever possible.

Vindhyachal is 70 km from Varanasi but the temple queue can add 1-2 hours on weekends and festival days. The Vindhyavasini Devi Temple is a major Shakti Peeth and draws very large crowds – particularly on Navratri (March/April and September/October) and on weekends. For a comfortable Vindhyachal visit, plan a Tuesday-Thursday 6:00-9:00 AM arrival. Experience My India times all Vindhyachal visits to avoid the peak queue.

Lakhaniya Dari and Vindham Falls are seasonal – they have negligible water outside the monsoon and post-monsoon period. Both waterfalls are at their peak August-November. In December-April, they may be reduced to a trickle or completely dry. Many travel articles describe these as year-round attractions without noting this seasonal restriction. Experience My India checks current waterfall conditions before scheduling excursions. Call +91-7302265809.

The nearest elevated terrain is the Vindhya foothills (40-70 km south, 300-400 metres elevation) – featuring seasonal waterfalls like Lakhaniya Dari (40 km) and Vindham Falls (48 km). These are nature excursions, not hill stations with tourist infrastructure. The nearest true hill stations (Rishikesh, Mussoorie) are 800-900 km away. Experience My India suggests the best Varanasi region nature excursion for your dates – call +91-7302265809.

Q3. Can I touch Shivling in Kashi?

Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi has specific darshan protocols. General Sugam Darshan (the standard free pass system) allows darshan of the Jyotirlinga from a designated viewing area – touching the Jyotirlinga is not guaranteed in standard darshan due to crowd management. Abhishek (ritual bathing of the Shivling) is a separate puja service available at the temple – check the temple’s official site (srikashivishwanath.in) for current abhishek booking. Experience My India coordinates Kashi Vishwanath darshan for all tour groups – call +91-7302265809.

Q4. What are the top 5 tourist places near Varanasi?

The top 5 places to visit near Varanasi: (1) Sarnath (10 km – Buddha’s first sermon site; Dhamek Stupa; Sarnath Museum); (2) Ramnagar Fort (14 km – 18th-century palace museum; Ganga bank); (3) Chunar Fort (35 km – medieval sandstone fort with Ganga valley view); (4) Vindhyachal Shakti Peeth (70 km – Vindhyavasini Devi temple, major Shakti Peeth on the Ganga); (5) Prayagraj Triveni Sangam (120 km – sacred Ganga-Yamuna-Saraswati confluence). Q5. How far is Sarnath from Varanasi?

Sarnath is 10 km from central Varanasi (from Godowlia or Dashashwamedh Ghat area). Travel time: 25-45 minutes by cab or auto-rickshaw, depending on traffic. The Sarnath circuit (Dhamek Stupa + Sarnath Museum + Mulagandha Kuti Vihara + Thai/Japanese monasteries) takes 2.5-3 hours. The Sarnath Museum is closed on Fridays. Dhamek Stupa ASI entry: ₹40 Indian / ₹600 foreign. Experience My India includes Sarnath in all Varanasi 2-day tours – call +91-7302265809.

Q6. Is Prayagraj worth a day trip from Varanasi?

Yes – Prayagraj (120 km, 2.5-3 hours by cab or 2 hours by train) is one of the most rewarding day trips from Varanasi. The Triveni Sangam (sacred confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati) is one of the holiest sites in Hinduism. A day trip covers: Triveni Sangam boat ride, Allahabad Fort (₹20-₹30 entry), Anand Bhawan (Nehru family museum) and Hanuman Mandir. Experience My India recommends the train (Varanasi-Prayagraj, 2 hours) over road on weekends – call +91-7302265809.

Q7. What is Vindhyachal and is it worth visiting from Varanasi?

Vindhyachal (70 km from Varanasi, 90-120 minutes by cab) is a major Shakti Peeth – the Vindhyavasini Devi Temple on the Ganga bank. It is part of a 3-temple Vindhyachal circuit: Vindhyavasini Devi + Ashtabhuja Devi + Kali Khoh (all within 5 km). All temples are free. Best visited on a Tuesday-Thursday 6:00-9:00 AM to avoid queues. For Shakti tradition devotees, Vindhyachal is one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in eastern UP. Experience My India plans Vindhyachal day trips – call +91-7302265809.

Q8. Can I do Ayodhya as a day trip from Varanasi?

Ayodhya is 200-210 km from Varanasi (4-5.5 hours by road via NH-731). A same-day return trip is possible but extremely rushed – 8-10 hours of total travel for 2-3 hours at the destination. Experience My India strongly recommends an overnight stay in Ayodhya (minimum 2 days) when combining it with Varanasi. The Ayodhya-Varanasi 4-day package from ₹8,999 per person covers both cities properly – call +91-7302265809.
