Why Kanpur to Ayodhya Is One of the Most Travelled Pilgrimage Routes in UP

Kanpur is Uttar Pradesh’s largest industrial city, 230-240 km from Ayodhya – the birthplace of Lord Ram and one of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) of Hinduism. For millions of Kanpur residents, an Ayodhya pilgrimage is a one- or two-day journey they make repeatedly across a lifetime. With the inauguration of the new Ram Mandir in January 2024, the Kanpur to Ayodhya route has seen a dramatic increase in visitor volume – and the infrastructure has kept pace.

The route via Lucknow and the Lucknow-Agra Expressway is smooth, multi-lane and reliable. The NH27 connecting Lucknow to Ayodhya via Barabanki is equally well-maintained. Together, these two highways make the 230 km journey one of the most comfortable inter-city road trips in Uttar Pradesh.

I am Gurudutt, founder of Experience My India, born and raised in Braj Bhoomi and guiding pilgrims since 2018. I have coordinated more than 50,000 pilgrimages through Uttar Pradesh including the Kanpur-Ayodhya-Varanasi circuit. In this guide you will find exact distances, the best route, realistic travel times by every mode, 2026 taxi fares, train schedules, bus options and what to do in Ayodhya after you arrive. What Nobody Tells You About the Kanpur to Ayodhya Journey

After coordinating hundreds of Kanpur-Ayodhya pilgrimages since 2018, here is what I – Gurudutt, founder of Experience My India – share privately with every traveller before departure:

The Lucknow bypass is the single most important routing decision on this journey. Kanpur to Ayodhya via Lucknow city centre adds 45-90 minutes to the journey on weekdays and up to 2 hours on weekends due to Lucknow’s dense urban traffic. The Outer Ring Road bypass adds 10-15 km but consistently saves 30-60 minutes. Experience My India drivers always use the Ring Road bypass – this is not optional in our trip planning.

The last 15-20 km entering Ayodhya becomes extremely congested on festival days. On Ram Navami (April 6, 2026), Deepotsav (October 20, 2026) and Diwali weekends, the approach roads to Ram Janmabhoomi from the Faizabad side can add 60-120 minutes to the final stretch – even when the 220 km before it took only 4 hours. If your visit coincides with a festival, budget 90 minutes extra for the Ayodhya city entry.

Ayodhya Dham Junction is not walking distance from Ram Janmabhoomi. The newly built, beautifully renovated Ayodhya Dham station is approximately 3 km from the temple complex. Auto-rickshaws from the station: ₹40-₹60 (fair rate). Tuk-tuk drivers at the station regularly quote ₹150-₹200 to pilgrims unfamiliar with local rates. Use the station prepaid auto counter.

The Sarayu Aarti timing shifts by exactly one hour between summer and winter. Summer Aarti: 7:00 PM. Winter Aarti: 6:00 PM. Most travel guides list only one timing. Arriving at 7:00 PM in December means the Aarti ended 60 minutes ago. Experience My India confirms the exact current Aarti timing on the morning of every Ayodhya tour.

Toll fares on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway are per vehicle – not per person. ₹150-₹250 in total tolls across 3-4 booths for a car. Roadside taxis sometimes add these as “extra” at the end of the journey. Always confirm that tolls are included in your agreed fare before boarding. Experience My India’s cab rates always include tolls.

Experience My India plans all Kanpur to Ayodhya journeys around these operational realities. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.
