Ayodhya
Lord Ram’s birthplace and home to the newly consecrated Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir (January 2024). Ayodhya has seen a 5-10x increase in visitor numbers since the consecration, making it one of the fastest-growing pilgrimage destinations in India. Prayagraj

Sarnath
The site where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, 255 km away. The Dhamek Stupa (500 CE, 43 metres tall), the Sarnath Archaeological Museum (home of the Ashoka Lion Capital – India’s national emblem) and the Deer Park are within one complex. Entry ₹25 (Indian).

Agra
Home to the Taj Mahal – arguably the most recognised building in the world, built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1631 and 1653 as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Agra also contains Agra Fort (UNESCO Heritage, Shah Jahan’s prison in his final years) and Fatehpur Sikri (38 km away, Akbar’s deserted sandstone imperial city).

Lucknow
Uttar Pradesh’s capital and the cultural heartland of Awadhi civilisation. Lucknow combines Mughal-era architecture (Bara Imambara, Chota Imambara, Rumi Darwaza) with British colonial-era buildings and one of India’s most celebrated regional cuisines (Awadhi biryani, galouti kebab, Tunday kababi). A good base for any UP itinerary.

Jhansi
The city associated with Rani Laxmi Bai – the queen of Jhansi who led the 1857 Indian uprising against British rule. The Jhansi Fort (11th century, significantly expanded in the 17th century) overlooks the city from a rock plateau and contains a museum with artefacts from the 1857 rebellion.
Entry: ₹25 (Indian). 400 km from Delhi. A natural stop between Delhi and Varanasi / Agra.

Nature & Wildlife
Dudhwa National Park
Located in the Terai belt (the foothills of the Himalayas) in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of northern UP, approximately 235 km from Lucknow. Dudhwa is a major tiger reserve – one of the Project Tiger sites – covering 884 square km of dense forest and grassland.
Best time for wildlife safari: November to June (park closes during monsoon July-September). Entry and safari fees apply. A good addition for visitors who want a natural counterpoint to UP’s urban and pilgrimage circuit.

Ground Truth – What Nobody Tells You About Visiting Uttar Pradesh
After guiding 50,000+ pilgrims through UP since 2018, here is what Experience My India knows that most UP travel guides will not say:
Uttar Pradesh is larger than most people plan for. The distance from Agra (western UP) to Varanasi (eastern UP) is approximately 635 km – roughly the same as London to Edinburgh. Many visitors plan “Agra + Varanasi in 2 days” without factoring the 9-10 hour journey between them. Experience My India consistently receives calls from pilgrims who have not accounted for this scale.
The four Sapta Puri cities in UP are not evenly distributed. Ayodhya is 200 km from Varanasi, Mathura is 530 km from Ayodhya and Prayagraj is between Varanasi and Ayodhya on the same highway. A correctly planned UP Sapta Puri circuit visits Varanasi → Prayagraj → Ayodhya as one east-west axis, then Mathura and Vrindavan as a separate west UP circuit – not as a single straight line.
Agra’s Taj Mahal area and Mathura/Vrindavan are naturally connected. Agra and Mathura are only 65 km apart – most pilgrims visiting Mathura from Delhi pass through or very near Agra anyway.
