The Right Way to See Kashi – Visiting Sequence

Before listing the places, the sequence matters in Kashi. Local tradition and practical experience both point to the same order:

Step 1 – Kaal Bhairav Temple (first, always) Kaal Bhairav is the Kotwal (guardian/chief) of Kashi. He governs who enters and stays in the sacred city. Every Kashi yatra begins with Kaal Bhairav’s blessings before proceeding to Kashi Vishwanath or the ghats.

Step 2 – Kashi Vishwanath Temple (7-9 AM weekday) The Jyotirlinga darshan is the central experience. Morning weekday window gives 45-90 minute queue; afternoon and weekend add significantly more time.

Kaal Bhairav Temple

Assi Ghat – Morning Prayers and Subah-e-Banaras

Scindia Ghat

One of Kashi’s most visually striking sights – a partially submerged Shiva temple that tilted into the Ganges due to the weight of the stone structure. The tilting temple, half in water, is best photographed from a boat in morning light.

Kedar Ghat

A popular bathing ghat with a distinctive red-and-white striped temple structure that makes it immediately recognisable from the river. Predominantly used by pilgrims from South India. The Kedar Temple at the top of the ghat is one of the older Shiva shrines on the waterfront.

Panchganga Ghat

Ramnagar Fort

An 18th-century sandstone fort and palace on the opposite (eastern) bank of the Ganges, approximately 14 km from Kashi Vishwanath by road (including the Malviya Bridge crossing). The fort contains a museum of vintage royal artifacts – antique cars, weapons, astronomical equipment and ivory work.

Thatheri Bazaar

Godowlia Crossing

The commercial heart of the old city – where every lane seems to converge. Street food, clothing, local sweets, Banarasi sari shops and the constant movement of residents and pilgrims make this one of the most dense and characterful intersections in any Indian city.

Baba Keenaram Ashram

The headquarters and primary site of the Aghor spiritual tradition – a Shaiva tantric lineage associated with Kashi since the 18th century. The ashram offers a glimpse of one of Kashi’s more ancient and less-publicized spiritual traditions. Visiting with respectful curiosity is welcome.

Sarnath – The Buddhist Extension (11 Km)

Sarnath deserves its own section because it is consistently undervisited relative to its importance. This is the site where the Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya – the moment Buddhism began as a world religion.

Ground Truth – What Nobody Tells You About Places to Visit in Kashi

1. The Ganga Aarti from the ghat steps means watching the backs of priests – almost everyone doing this for the first time gets it wrong. The ceremony at Dashashwamedh faces the river. Priests stand on the ghat facing the Ganges. From the ghat steps or the crowd on the bank, you are behind the ceremony. From a river-facing boat, you see it directly. 2. Kaal Bhairav Temple is not on most standard Kashi sightseeing lists – but visiting Kashi Vishwanath without it first is considered incomplete by every Kashi priest and guide. 4. Manikarnika Ghat should not be visited by walking up to it from the ghat – it should be seen from a passing boat. The cremation ghat has touts at the land approach who will try to take visitors into the ghat and then demand large “donations for wood.” From the river, you see the ghat respectfully and safely without this interaction.

5. Vishalakshi Shakti Peeth near Mir Ghat is one of 51 Shakti Peethas in India – almost no pilgrim visiting Kashi knows it exists. It sits quietly near Mir Ghat, between Dashashwamedh and Scindia Ghat and is rarely included in standard Kashi sightseeing lists.
