An Ayodhya tour itinerary should always start at Hanuman Garhi (traditional first stop), then Ram Janmabhoomi, Kanak Bhawan and the Ram Ki Paidi Saryu Aarti on Day 1. Day 2 adds Dashrath Mahal, Treta Ke Thakur, Nageshvarnath Temple and Guptar Ghat sunset. Day 3 explores Mani Parvat, Bharat Kund/Nandigram (20 km away) and local markets. Two days covers the essentials. Book the free Sugam Darshan pass on shreerammandir.org before visiting. Experience My India packages from ₹1,999. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

The Rule That Makes Every Ayodhya Itinerary Work

Before the 1-day, 2-day and 3-day plans in this guide, one rule applies to all of them: start at Hanuman Garhi, not Ram Janmabhoomi.

Local tradition in Ayodhya holds that Lord Hanuman – Ram’s most devoted protector – is the Dwarpal (guardian deity) of the city. Pilgrims who seek Hanuman’s blessings before entering Ram Janmabhoomi are following the traditional sequence that Ayodhya-based priests have maintained for centuries. Most online “top Ayodhya itineraries” send visitors straight to Ram Mandir – this guide does not.

The second rule that structures every itinerary: all major temples in Ayodhya close in the afternoon. Plan your temple visits between 7:00 AM-12:00 PM and 4:00 PM-8:00 PM. The midday window (12:00-4:00 PM) is for lunch, rest and travel.

I am Gurudutt, born and raised in Braj Bhoomi and founder of Experience My India. Since 2018, our team has guided over 50,000 pilgrims through India’s sacred cities. The itineraries below are built from that on-ground experience – every time, every sequence, every practical note is grounded in what actually works in Ayodhya today.

How Far is Ram Mandir from Hanuman Garhi?

This is one of the most commonly asked Ayodhya planning questions.

DetailInformation
DistanceApproximately 500 metres to 700 metres
Travel time on foot7-10 minutes
Travel time by e-rickshaw3-5 minutes
Best approachWalk from Hanuman Garhi directly to Ram Mandir (flat, manageable)

Hanuman Garhi and Ram Janmabhoomi are within the same central Ayodhya area – this is why the traditional “Hanuman Garhi first” sequence makes practical sense. After completing the 45-60 minute Hanuman Garhi visit (including the 76-step climb), the walk to Ram Janmabhoomi takes under 10 minutes. No separate transport is required between these two sites. Experience My India sequences every Ayodhya tour to walk directly from one to the other. Call +91-7302265809 for the complete on-ground navigation guidance.

Local Transport Guide – Ayodhya Itinerary

ModeWhen to UseTypical Fare
E-rickshaw (full day hire)Most practical for covering 6-8 sites in a day₹400-₹600 for the day
E-rickshaw (per ride)Short hops within the city₹30-₹80 per ride
Auto-rickshawLonger distances (e.g., Guptar Ghat at 5 km)₹80-₹150 per ride
Private cabNandigram/Bharat Kund excursion (20 km)₹600-₹900 one way
WalkingHanuman Garhi → Ram Mandir; Ram Ki Paidi ghat circuitFree

Key transport reality: Private vehicles cannot enter the immediate approach lanes to Ram Janmabhoomi. Park at the designated multi-level parking on the outskirts and use e-rickshaws or walk for the final stretch. Experience My India manages this transition for every guided group. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

Budget dharamshalasVery budget-conscious pilgrims₹200-₹600/nightBasic; clean; near main temples

Experience My India recommendation: For a 2-day stay, a hotel near Ram Ki Paidi gives the best balance – easy ghat access every evening without a vehicle and e-rickshaw access to all Day 1 and Day 2 temples within 10-15 minutes. Call +91-7302265809 for current hotel availability.

The Hidden Gem of Ayodhya – Bharat Kund at Nandigram

The single most underrated site near Ayodhya is Bharat Kund at Nandigram, approximately 20 km from the city centre (30-40 minutes by cab).

Nandigram is where Prince Bharat – Lord Ram’s devoted younger brother – chose to rule during Ram’s 14-year exile, refusing to sit on the throne himself. Instead, Bharat placed Ram’s sandals (padukas) on the throne and governed as Ram’s representative.

DetailInformation
Distance from Ayodhya20 km
Travel time30-40 minutes by cab
SignificanceWhere Bharat ruled for 14 years with Ram’s sandals on the throne
Primary siteBharat Kund – a sacred pond; Bharat Mandir (main temple)
Crowd levelVery low – one of Ayodhya’s least crowded significant sites
EntryFree
Best included inDay 3 morning

Experience My India considers Nandigram the most spiritually significant “hidden gem” in the Ayodhya circuit – the devotion story of Bharat at this site is one of the Ramayana’s most moving, yet most visitors never make the short drive. Call +91-7302265809 to add it to your Day 3 itinerary.

Ground Truth – What Nobody Tells You About an Ayodhya Itinerary

After guiding 50,000+ pilgrims through India’s sacred cities since 2018, here is what Experience My India knows about Ayodhya planning that most itinerary guides will not say:

Post-2024 Ram Mandir crowds are higher than any estimate you will find online. Since the January 2024 consecration, Ayodhya has seen a 5-10x increase in weekly visitors. Queue times at Ram Janmabhoomi that were 20-30 minutes in 2023 are now 1-3 hours on weekends. The Sugam Darshan pass and a weekday visit are the two most effective crowd management tools – both are underused by self-planned visitors.

Hanuman Garhi’s 76 steps are steep enough to require advance consideration for elderly pilgrims. The incline is 30-35 degrees in sections. For groups with elderly members who cannot climb, this is a decision point – some choose to wait at the base while younger family members climb, while others skip the climb and do a darshan from the approach area. Experience My India assesses this for every group.

The Nandigram/Bharat Kund excursion (Day 3) is consistently rated by our pilgrims as one of their most moving Ayodhya experiences – often more so than the main temple circuit – precisely because of its quietness and the intimacy of the Bharat story. Yet it appears on fewer than 10% of standard Ayodhya itineraries.

Local markets (Rekabganj, Chowk) are best visited between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM – the midday market is less active and evening shopping coincides with the most pleasant walking conditions. Ramnami fabrics and Ram Naam prasad are the most distinctive Ayodhya-specific purchases that cannot be found elsewhere.

Know Before You Travel – Ayodhya Tour Itinerary

  • Visit Hanuman Garhi first – the traditional sequence is Hanuman Garhi → Ram Janmabhoomi
  • 76 steps at Hanuman Garhi – steep; assess for elderly pilgrims before confirming
  • No phones inside Ram Janmabhoomi – deposit at hotel or cloak room
  • All temples except Ram Mandir close 12:00-4:00 PM – use this window for lunch, rest and travel
  • Ram Ki Paidi Saryu Aarti begins 6:30 PM – arrive by 6:00 PM for a good position
  • Bharat Kund/Nandigram is 20 km – requires a dedicated cab trip, best on Day 3 morning
  • Dress code at all temples – modest attire; scarves available outside for ₹20-₹50

Frequently Asked Questions – Ayodhya Tour Itinerary

How many days are sufficient for the Ayodhya trip?

Two days is the recommended minimum for a complete Ayodhya itinerary – Day 1 covers the spiritual core (Hanuman Garhi, Ram Janmabhoomi, Kanak Bhawan, Saryu Aarti) and Day 2 adds the heritage layer (Dashrath Mahal, Treta Ke Thakur, Nageshvarnath, Guptar Ghat sunset). Three days is ideal if you want to visit Bharat Kund at Nandigram (20 km away). One day is workable for just the essential core. Experience My India offers 1, 2 and 3-day Ayodhya packages from ₹1,999. Call +91-7302265809.

What is the hidden gem of Ayodhya?

Bharat Kund at Nandigram, approximately 20 km from Ayodhya city, is consistently the most underrated site in the Ayodhya circuit. This is where Prince Bharat ruled for 14 years during Ram’s exile – refusing to sit on the throne himself, placing Ram’s sandals (padukas) there instead. The site is quiet, deeply devotional and visited by a fraction of the pilgrims who come to the main temples. Experience My India includes Nandigram in all 3-day Ayodhya itineraries. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

How can I get a VIP pass for Ayodhya Ram Mandir?

There is no separately purchasable “VIP pass” at Ram Janmabhoomi – the official pre-registration system is the Sugam Darshan pass, available free on the official website shreerammandir.org. This is the closest legitimate equivalent to priority access and significantly reduces queue time. Any person or agent selling a “VIP Ram Mandir pass” for payment is not operating an officially sanctioned system. Experience My India assists with Sugam Darshan pass booking for every guided tour. Call +91-7302265809.

How far is Ram Mandir from Hanuman Garhi?

Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir is approximately 500 to 700 metres from Hanuman Garhi – a 7 to 10 minute walk on flat ground. The two sites are within the same central Ayodhya area, making the traditional sequence (Hanuman Garhi first, then Ram Mandir) both devotionally correct and geographically practical. No separate transport is needed between these two stops. Experience My India begins every Ayodhya tour at Hanuman Garhi and walks directly to Ram Mandir afterward. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

What is the Sugam Darshan pass for Ram Mandir?

The Sugam Darshan pass is a free, online pre-registration slot for Ram Janmabhoomi darshan, available on the official shreerammandir.org website. It assigns a specific time window for your darshan, significantly reducing queue time compared to the general (walk-in) darshan. The pass is free, requires a name and mobile number and takes 5 minutes to book. Experience My India recommends booking it 1-2 weeks before your visit. General darshan (without a pass) is always available but may involve 1-3 hour queues on weekends. Call +91-7302265809 for assistance.

What is the best time to visit Ayodhya for the itinerary?

October to March offers the most comfortable weather (5°C-28°C) and is ideal for the full 1/2/3-day Ayodhya itinerary. Ram Navami (April 2026) and Deepotsav (Diwali/Kartik) bring spectacular celebrations but require hotel booking 2-3 months ahead. Weekday visits (Tuesday-Thursday) consistently give shorter queues at Ram Janmabhoomi and Hanuman Garhi compared to weekends. Experience My India runs tours year-round. WhatsApp +91-7302265809 for seasonal advice.

Can I do both Ayodhya and Varanasi in one trip?

Yes. Ayodhya to Varanasi is approximately 200 km (3.5-4.5 hours by cab or train). A practical combined itinerary: 2 days in Ayodhya followed by a drive or train to Varanasi for 2 more days – covering Ram’s birthplace and India’s spiritual capital in one UP pilgrimage circuit. Experience My India’s Ayodhya + Varanasi Combo Tour covers this in 4 days from ₹3,999 per person. Call +91-7302265809 to plan.

What should I buy in Ayodhya?

Ayodhya’s most distinctive local purchases are Ramnami clothing (cloth printed with the name “Ram” in repeated patterns – used as a shawl, bedsheet or devotional garment), Ram Naam Prasad (sweet prasad distributed near the main temples) and local sweets from the Rekabganj and Chowk market lanes. These are distinctively Ayodhya-specific and not easily found in other cities. Experience My India guides every group to the most trusted shops. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.
