Two of India’s Most Sacred Cities – 164 Kilometres Apart

Ayodhya and Prayagraj are two of Uttar Pradesh’s five most significant pilgrimage cities and they sit on the same east-west axis along the Ganga plain. Ayodhya is the birthplace of Lord Ram. Prayagraj (Allahabad) is the Triveni Sangam – the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati rivers – one of Hinduism’s holiest pilgrimage sites and the host city of the Kumbh Mela.

At approximately 164-170 km, the Ayodhya to Prayagraj journey by road takes 3.5 to 4.5 hours – a manageable day trip in both directions. Most pilgrims who visit both cities either treat Prayagraj as a 3.5-hour day trip from Ayodhya or combine both as part of the larger East UP pilgrimage circuit with Varanasi.

I am Gurudutt, born and raised in Braj Bhoomi and founder of Experience My India. Since 2018, our team has guided over 50,000 pilgrims through Uttar Pradesh’s sacred cities. This guide gives you verified distances, travel times and taxi fares for the Ayodhya-Prayagraj connection.

Road quality: NH-330 is a national highway – 2 to 4 lanes, generally good condition. During festival seasons (Ram Navami in Ayodhya, Magh Mela / Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj), expect additional traffic near both city entry/exit points adding 30-60 minutes to the journey.

Shringverpur: Approximately 20 km from Prayagraj on the approach from Ayodhya lies Shringverpur – the sacred Ramayana site where Lord Ram, Sita and Laxman are believed to have crossed the Ganga River at the beginning of their 14-year exile. Is Ola Available in Ayodhya?

This is one of the most frequently searched questions for Ayodhya transport planning.

As of May 2026: Ola and Uber have limited availability in Ayodhya compared to larger cities like Lucknow or Varanasi. Coverage exists for some routes but is inconsistent – particularly for outstation travel like the Ayodhya → Prayagraj route.

What to use instead:

  • Pre-booked outstation cab: More reliable than app-based cabs for 164 km routes. Experience My India pre-books confirmed-rate outstation cabs. Call +91-7302265809.
  • Local Ayodhya car rental: Several local operators at Ayodhya Dham Station and near Ram Mandir offer outstation cabs at fixed per-km rates.
  • UPSRTC bus: Reliable for the route; departs from Faizabad Bus Stand (2 km from main Ayodhya area).

Experience My India pre-books all outstation cabs for Ayodhya guests at confirmed rates – no surprise surge pricing. WhatsApp +91-7302265809 for Ayodhya → Prayagraj cab booking.

Ground Truth – What Nobody Tells You About This Journey

After guiding 50,000+ pilgrims through Uttar Pradesh since 2018, here is what Experience My India knows about the Ayodhya to Prayagraj journey that most travel guides skip:

The 164 km distance can stretch to 4.5+ hours during festival season near either city. NH-330 is a good road, but both Ayodhya (Ram Navami, Deepotsav) and Prayagraj (Magh Mela, Kumbh) are major pilgrimage event cities. When festivals overlap – particularly in January-February – the road between them sees dramatically increased traffic on both the Ayodhya and Prayagraj ends. Budget an extra hour in these periods.

Shringverpur is almost always skipped and almost always regretted. The 20 km detour off the direct Prayagraj approach adds 45 minutes to the journey and gives pilgrims who have just completed Ayodhya a second major Ramayana site – the specific point where Ram’s exile from Ayodhya materially began. It is on the way; passing it without stopping is a missed opportunity.

Prayagraj’s Triveni Sangam requires planning for the ghat access. Many first-time visitors arrive in Prayagraj without knowing that reaching the Sangam (the actual river confluence) requires either a boat ride or a specific ghat approach – you cannot drive to the exact point where the rivers meet. Plan 3-4 hours in Prayagraj minimum for the Sangam boat ride and the main sites.

The round-trip same-day cab from Ayodhya to Prayagraj and back works, but is tiring. The 7-9 hour total (3.5-4.5 hrs each way + 2-3 hrs in Prayagraj) is feasible but leaves little margin. Experience My India recommends 2 days minimum for combining Ayodhya and Prayagraj – one night in Ayodhya, then drive to Prayagraj for the Sangam, overnight in Prayagraj and continue to Varanasi (120 km) the next day.
