Spiritual & Religious Destinations (1-8)
1. Sarnath – 10 km (25-35 minutes)
The site where the Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment – making it one of the four most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world. The 128-foot Dhamek Stupa (500 CE), the Sarnath Museum (houses the Ashoka Lion Capital – India’s national emblem) and the peaceful Deer Park are all within the same complex. A half-day from Varanasi; best combined with a morning in the city.
2. Prayagraj – 120 km (2.5-3 hours)
The confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati rivers – Triveni Sangam – makes Prayagraj one of Hinduism’s holiest sites. The city also has Anand Bhavan (Nehru family heritage home), Khusro Bagh (Mughal-era tomb complex) and Allahabad Fort. A long day trip or an easy overnight from Varanasi.
3. Ayodhya – 200 km (4-4.5 hours)
Lord Ram’s birthplace and home to the newly consecrated Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir (January 2024), Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan and Ram Ki Paidi ghats on the Sarayu River. 4. Vindhyachal – 62 km (1.5 hours)

5. Chitrakoot – 250 km (5.5-6 hours)
A forested pilgrimage town on the Mandakini River, deeply tied to the Ramayana – Lord Ram is believed to have spent a significant portion of his 14-year exile here. 6. Bodh Gaya – 255 km (5.5-6.5 hours)
The site of the Buddha’s enlightenment, the Mahabodhi Temple (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the sacred Bodhi Tree make Bodh Gaya the most significant Buddhist pilgrimage site in the world. The Mahabodhi Temple complex draws pilgrims from Thailand, Sri Lanka, Japan, Tibet and across Southeast Asia. An overnight or 2-night stay is needed. Experience My India can combine Bodh Gaya with Sarnath for a complete Buddhist pilgrimage circuit. Call +91-7302265809.
7. Kaushambi – 150 km (3.5 hours)
An ancient Buddhist and Jain pilgrimage site with archaeological ruins and historical Ashoka pillars, Kaushambi was once one of the most important cities of ancient India. The ruins and the peaceful riverbank setting make it a worthwhile stop for history-focused visitors.
8. Sitamarhi – 180 km (4 hours)
A site associated with Goddess Sita, with several temples and pilgrimage points connected to the Ramayana narrative. An overnight stay is preferred given the 4-hour one-way drive.

18. Agori Fort – 110 km (3 hours)

Which Hill Station is Nearest to Varanasi?
The honest answer: Varanasi does not have a classic hill station nearby in the traditional sense (the kind with pine forests, 1,500+ metre elevations and cool temperatures year-round).
The closest elevated terrain is the Vindhya range – the Mirzapur plateau, Kaimur hills and Sonbhadra area to the south and west of Varanasi. At elevations of 300-450 metres, these are not cool-climate hill stations in the way Mussoorie or Nainital are, but they do offer forested terrain, waterfalls and significantly cooler air than the plains during summer.
| “Hill Station” Candidate | Distance | Elevation | Reality |
| Mirzapur / Vindhya Plateau | 50-70 km | 300-450 metres | Forest terrain; waterfalls; not a hill station in the classic sense |
| Kaimur Hills (Robertsganj area) | 90-110 km | 400-500 metres | Wildlife and forest; cooler than Varanasi plains |
| Mussoorie (Uttarakhand) | 550 km | 2,000 metres | True hill station but outside 300 km range |
For a genuine hill station experience within a reasonable drive, Nainital (480 km) and Mussoorie (550 km) are the closest options but both require a full-day drive from Varanasi – outside the 300 km bracket. Call +91-7302265809 for a multi-day Northern India itinerary if you want to combine Varanasi with a hill station.
Where to Go in December for 2 Days from Varanasi
December is one of the best months for short road trips from Varanasi – cool, clear weather (10°C-22°C) and minimal rain make all 20 destinations in this guide accessible.
| Destination | Why December Works | Distance | What You Get |
| Prayagraj | Cool weather + Magh Mela preparation period | 120 km | Triveni Sangam, Anand Bhavan, winter ghats |
| Ayodhya | Best weather for the Ayodhya temple circuit | 200 km | Ram Mandir, Hanuman Garhi, Saryu Aarti |
| Bodh Gaya | International Buddhist winter season | 255 km | Mahabodhi Temple, Bodhi Tree, international monasteries |

Ground Truth – What Nobody Tells You About Day Trips From Varanasi
After coordinating day trips and weekend getaways from Varanasi since 2018, here is what Experience My India knows that most travel guides will not say:
Prayagraj is a longer day trip than most people expect. The 120 km and “2.5 hours” estimate assumes clear expressway traffic throughout. In practice, the Varanasi-Prayagraj highway has significant town traffic at multiple points – real drive time is often 3 to 3.5 hours one way. A return day trip leaves very little time at the destination. An overnight stay converts it into a meaningful visit.
The Vindhya waterfalls are genuinely seasonal. Rajdari, Devdari, Vindham and Tanda falls are all at their best between July and October (monsoon and immediately after). By January-February, many of these falls reduce to a trickle or stop entirely. Visitors who plan a December waterfall trip from Varanasi are often disappointed – the December river and wildlife trips (Kaimur, Chandraprabha) work better in that season.
Salkhan Fossil Park (Sonbhadra) is one of India’s most remarkable and undervisited geological sites. The 1.4-billion-year-old stromatolites are almost never mentioned in general “places near Varanasi” lists, yet they represent some of the oldest preserved life forms on earth. This is a genuinely rare natural heritage experience that requires no particular expertise to appreciate and sees very few tourists.
Bodh Gaya is 255 km – the drive is 6+ hours, not 4. Most distance listing tools underestimate the Varanasi-Bodh Gaya drive due to the last 60-70 km through Bihar’s roads, which are slower than the initial highway. Always budget 6-7 hours for this drive and plan a 2-night stay to do justice to the Mahabodhi Temple complex.
Know Before You Go – Tourist Places Near Varanasi Within 300 Kms
- Sarnath and Ramnagar Fort are half-day additions to any Varanasi visit – no separate trip required
- Vindhya waterfalls peak between July and October – plan accordingly if waterfalls are the primary draw
- December-February is the best season for forts, heritage sites and the Prayagraj / Ayodhya / Bodh Gaya circuit
- Prayagraj needs an overnight stay for a relaxed visit; the drive time makes a same-day return very rushed
- Bodh Gaya requires 2 days minimum – 255 km and 6+ hours of driving needs at least 1 overnight
- No classic hill station exists within 300 km – Vindhya plateau terrain is the closest approximation
- Carry cash – many waterfall sites, forest entries and rural fort sites do not have UPI/card facilities

There is no classic hill station within 300 km of Varanasi. The nearest elevated terrain is the Vindhya plateau – Mirzapur and Kaimur area at 300-500 metres elevation – which offers forests and waterfalls but not a cool-climate hill station. The nearest true hill stations are Nainital (approximately 480 km) and Mussoorie (approximately 550 km), both outside the 300 km range. Experience My India recommends Mirzapur waterfalls and Chandraprabha Sanctuary for a nature escape near Varanasi. Call +91-7302265809.
December is excellent for short getaways from Varanasi – cool, clear, dry weather suits all types of travel. The best 2-day December trips are: Ayodhya (200 km – Ram Mandir in winter weather, Saryu Aarti), Prayagraj (120 km – winter ghats, heritage sites) and Bodh Gaya (255 km – international Buddhist season). For a nature option, Chunar Fort combined with Vindhyachal is a comfortable December day trip. Experience My India offers Ayodhya 2-day packages from ₹2,999 per person. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.
Yes, but it is a demanding day. The 120 km drive takes 2.5-3.5 hours each way, leaving 5-6 hours in Prayagraj – enough for Triveni Sangam, Anand Bhavan and one or two other sites. An overnight stay in Prayagraj is strongly recommended for a relaxed visit. Experience My India offers both a same-day Prayagraj trip and an overnight Varanasi + Prayagraj combo. Call +91-7302265809 to choose based on your schedule.
Yes – Bodh Gaya (255 km, 6+ hours drive) is one of the most significant Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world, home to the Mahabodhi Temple (UNESCO World Heritage) and the sacred Bodhi Tree. However, the distance makes an overnight stay essential; a same-day return from Varanasi leaves very little time at the destination. Experience My India’s Buddhist Circuit package combines Sarnath (10 km from Varanasi) and Bodh Gaya in a 3-day trip from ₹4,999. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.
The best waterfalls near Varanasi within 100 km are Rajdari Falls and Devdari Falls (65-70 km, Chandauli district), Lakhaniya Dari (40 km) and Vindham Falls (50-55 km, Mirzapur). All are seasonal – they are at their best from July to October during and after the monsoon. By December-January, most reduce significantly. Experience My India arranges waterfall day trips with cab and guide in the correct season. Call +91-7302265809.
