Kashi Vishwanath Temple Varanasi opens at 2:30 AM and closes at 11:00 PM. General darshan is free; Sugam VIP darshan costs ₹250 per person and is bookable at shrikashivishwanath.org up to 45 days in advance. Five aartis are held daily – the Sandhya Aarti at 7:00 PM is the most attended. Mobiles, bags and leather items are not allowed inside. Experience My India has guided 50,000+ pilgrims through Varanasi since 2018. Packages from ₹3,999 per person. WhatsApp +91-7302265809 – reply in 30 minutes.

Why Kashi Vishwanath Is Unlike Any Other Temple in India

Most pilgrims arrive in Varanasi with the assumption that Kashi Vishwanath darshan will work like any other temple visit – queue up, wait, receive blessings, leave. What they do not anticipate is this: Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, receives 50,000 to 1 lakh devotees on ordinary days and stands in the narrowest lanes of old Varanasi where no vehicle can reach within 500 metres. The general queue on festival days stretches 4 to 6 hours. Electronics are completely prohibited inside. And the five daily aartis shut all darshan windows – including paid Sugam Darshan – for the duration of each aarti. First-time pilgrims who arrive at 10:30 AM frequently find the doors shut for Bhog Aarti at 11:00 AM and have no plan for the 1.5-hour gap.

I am Gurudutt, born and raised in Braj Bhoomi and the founder of Experience My India. Since 2018, I have personally guided 50,000+ pilgrims through Varanasi – through Kashi Vishwanath, Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, the ancient ghats of the city and the complete Kashi pilgrimage circuit. Every darshan timing, crowd pattern and ground-truth reality in this guide comes from that direct on-ground experience, updated for 2026.

By the end of this Kashi Vishwanath Temple Varanasi complete guide, you will know exact darshan and aarti timings, how to book the ₹250 Sugam Darshan pass step-by-step, what the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor changed about the experience, how to reach the temple from any city and six things about this temple that most guides never mention.

History of Kashi Vishwanath Temple – What Makes This Jyotirlinga Sacred

The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Vishwanath – “Lord of the Universe.” It enshrines one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the sacred self-manifested forms of Shiva mentioned in the Shiva Purana and the Skanda Purana. According to the Kashi Khanda, Varanasi rests on the tip of Lord Shiva’s trident (trishul), held suspended above the material world. Dying in Kashi is considered moksha-granting in the Vaishnav and Shaiva traditions – Lord Shiva himself is said to whisper the Taraka Mantra (the mantra of liberation) into the ear of the dying.

Temple History Timeline:

PeriodEvent
Ancient periodOriginal temple existed at this site for thousands of years – mentioned in Kashi Khanda and Skanda Purana
1194 CETemple destroyed during Qutb ud-Din Aibak’s campaign
1490 CERebuilt by Shivaji’s minister
1669 CEDemolished by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb – Gyanvapi Mosque built on part of the site
1780 CECurrent temple structure built by Maratha Queen Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore
1835 CEGold cladding on the three shikharas donated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab – approximately 1,000 kg of gold used
2019-2021 CEKashi Vishwanath Corridor built and inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi in December 2021 – connecting the temple directly to the Ganga ghats

The three gold-plated shikharas (spires) of the current temple are the most photographed image of Kashi and create one of the most recognisable religious skylines in India. The tallest shikhara stands 15.5 metres high. The central Jyotirlinga is housed in the inner sanctum (garbhagriha) – a cylindrical silver-clad lingam that is the direct object of worship.

Darshan Timings 2026 – Complete Updated Reference

This is the most searched information for any Kashi Vishwanath visit. Timings verified by Experience My India’s local team – June 2026. Important: the temple operates a strict ritual cycle. All darshan – including Sugam Darshan – is suspended during aarti windows. Plan your arrival around these gaps.

General Darshan Timings:

SessionOpening TimeClosing TimeNotes
Pre-dawn session2:30 AM4:00 AMBefore Mangala Aarti – very limited crowd
Morning session4:00 AM11:00 AMBusiest window 6:00-9:00 AM
Afternoon break11:00 AM12:30 PMBhog Aarti – all darshan closed
Afternoon session12:30 PM7:00 PMBuilds from 4:00 PM – evening peak
Evening break7:00 PM8:30 PMSandhya / Saptarishi Aarti – all darshan closed
Late evening8:30 PM10:30 PMPost-aarti window – lighter crowd
Night break10:30 PM11:00 PMShayana Aarti
Temple closes11:00 PM2:30 AMFull overnight closure

Critical planning reality: The two most common mistakes are arriving at 10:30 AM (temple closes at 11:00 AM for Bhog Aarti) and arriving at 6:30 PM (temple closes at 7:00 PM for Saptarishi Aarti). Both windows give pilgrims only 30 minutes before a sudden closure – and the Sugam Darshan slot may go unused. Experience My India plans all Varanasi itineraries around the clean windows: 7:00-10:30 AM and 1:00-6:30 PM. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

Aarti Schedule – All 5 Daily Aartis Explained

The five daily aartis at Kashi Vishwanath are the spiritual centrepiece of a Varanasi visit. Each aarti has its own mood, ritual significance and crowd density. Aarti passes are required for seating; without a pass, aartis can be viewed from the designated standing area if you arrive early.

Complete Aarti Schedule:

Aarti NameTimeSignificanceCrowd Level
Mangala Aarti3:00 AM – 4:00 AMFirst awakening ritual – Shiva awakened for the dayLowest – limited but most intimate
Bhog Aarti11:15 AM – 12:20 PMFood offering ritual – “bhog” presented to the deityModerate – midday attendance
Sandhya / Saptarishi Aarti7:00 PM – 8:15 PMEvening prayer with 7-flame lamp – most visually spectacularHighest – 7:00 PM is peak attendance
Shringara Aarti9:00 PM – 10:15 PMDeity adorned for the nightModerate – devotional atmosphere
Shayana Aarti10:30 PM – 11:00 PMDeity put to rest for the night – final ritualLow – late-night devotees only

Aarti pass booking: Aarti passes are available online at shrikashivishwanath.org. The Mangala Aarti (3:00 AM) passes are the rarest – book at least 15 days in advance. Sandhya Aarti passes book out 7 to 10 days before on weekends and festival days. Arrive 30 to 45 minutes before your aarti time to complete security and locker deposit.

Experience My India note: We book aarti passes on behalf of all Varanasi tour group members – confirmed before your arrival. No last-minute portal scrambling. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

Sugam VIP Darshan – Step-by-Step Booking Guide

Sugam Darshan is the official priority queue-management system of Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple. It is not a separate spiritual category – it is a time-slot system that allows you to skip the general queue, which on ordinary weekdays runs 90 minutes to 3 hours and on festival days stretches 4 to 6 hours. The cost is ₹250 per person for Sugam Darshan.

Step-by-Step Booking:

StepActionDetail
1Open official portalshrikashivishwanath.org – works on mobile and desktop
2Register / Log inEnter mobile number → receive OTP → verify
3Select “Sugam Darshan”Homepage – choose date and time slot (up to 45 days in advance)
4Enter detailsName, Aadhaar number or Passport (international pilgrims); max 8 persons per booking
5Pay ₹250 per personOnline payment – UPI, debit card, credit card accepted
6Download passPDF pass with QR code → screenshot as backup
7Arrive at Gate 1 (Vishwanath Dwar) or Gate 4Reach 30-45 minutes before your slot – complete locker deposit first

Types of darshan available on the portal:

  • Sugam Darshan (₹250) – priority queue, no contact with Jyotirlinga
  • Sparsh Darshan – touching the Jyotirlinga directly; extremely limited slots; book 20-30 days ahead
  • Rudrabhishek – full puja ritual performed in the inner sanctum; 45-90 minutes; requires advance booking and pandit arrangement

What to bring:

  • Downloaded Sugam Darshan pass (screenshot as backup)
  • Original Aadhaar or Passport (must match booking)
  • No mobile phones, cameras, bags, power banks, leather belts, leather shoes or  outside food inside the complex
  • Free locker facility available at Gates 1, 2, 3 and 4

Tip from Experience My India: For weekend visits, the 7:00-8:00 AM Sugam Darshan slot is the most peaceful. Avoid booking the 10:00-11:00 AM slot – Bhog Aarti begins at 11:15 AM and latecomers lose their slot entirely. Our team books all Sugam passes for tour groups as part of the package. Kashi Vishwanath Corridor – What Changed After December 2021

The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor (Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham) was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 13 December 2021. It fundamentally changed the experience of visiting the temple – and most first-time pilgrims arriving with pre-2022 information about the temple are in for a very different visit.

What the Corridor did:

Before the CorridorAfter the Corridor
Temple accessed only through narrow alleys of the old cityDedicated 5-lane corridor from Lalita Ghat directly to the temple
No river view from the templeOpen viewing of the Ganga from the temple complex for the first time in history
3,000 sq metres total complex area50,000 sq metres – nearly 17x larger
Surrounding shops and encroachments obscured the temple23 buildings acquired and cleared – the golden shikharas now visible from the Ganga
Limited security infrastructureFull security screening, bag lockers and 4 entry gates
No central prasad or visitor servicesDedicated prasad counter, tourist facilitation centre, museum

Practical impact for pilgrims: The Corridor means pilgrims arriving at Dashashwamedh Ghat can now walk through the Corridor directly to the temple – approximately 400 metres. This is the most common approach. The view of the temple from the Ganga side (Lalita Ghat, Manikarnika Ghat) now includes the golden spires visible over the temple wall – a view that did not exist before 2021.

Experience My India includes a Corridor walk with every Varanasi tour package – the view from Lalita Ghat toward the golden shikharas at sunrise is one of the most significant visual experiences of the pilgrimage. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

How to Reach Kashi Vishwanath Temple – From Every Major City

The temple sits in Lahori Tola, Varanasi – inside the old city where no vehicle can reach within 500 metres. All pilgrims must complete the final approach on foot through the lanes of the old city or through the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor from the Ganga side.

What Nobody Tells You About Visiting Kashi Vishwanath Temple

After guiding 50,000+ pilgrims through Varanasi since 2018, here is what Experience My India’s team sees go wrong on every unplanned visit:

The two aarti closures destroy poorly planned itineraries. Bhog Aarti closes the temple from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Saptarishi Aarti closes it again from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Pilgrims who plan a “morning darshan” and arrive at 10:30 AM find the temple closing in 30 minutes. Experience My India plans around the clean windows: 7:00-10:30 AM (morning block) and 1:00-6:30 PM (afternoon block).

The locker deposit adds 20-30 minutes each way. Mobiles, bags, belts and wallets must be deposited before entry. Locker queues at Gates 1 and 4 build from 7:00 AM onward. Add at least 45 minutes to your total temple visit time. Our guides accompany pilgrims through this process and hold locker keys during darshan.

Sugam Darshan is NOT a “VIP touch darshan.” A common misunderstanding. The ₹250 Sugam pass gives priority queue access – it does not allow touching the Jyotirlinga. Sparsh Darshan (touching the lingam) is a separate, more limited booking, available only on certain days and with advance booking of 20-30 days.

Weekday mornings between 5:00 AM and 7:00 AM are dramatically calmer than any other time of the day or week. Saturdays and Mondays (Lord Shiva’s sacred day) see the heaviest crowds. During Shravan month (July-August), the temple receives 3 to 5 times normal daily footfall – booking a Sugam pass 30 to 45 days in advance is the only reliable option.

Lane navigation in the old city is genuinely confusing for first-timers. The approach to Gate 1 through the old Kashi lanes involves narrow alleys, unmarked turns and persistent guide touts. Three out of every five first-time independent visitors we have met outside the temple had walked the wrong lane for 15-20 minutes. Experience My India provides a local guide who walks with every pilgrim from hotel to gate. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

Photography rules are strict and enforced. No mobile phones inside the inner complex. Photography is permitted only in the outer Corridor area – not at the Jyotirlinga, not in the aarti area. Temple security confiscates phones that are not deposited. This is a firm rule, not a suggestion.

Know Before You Plan Your Kashi Vishwanath Visit

  • Temple closes for Bhog Aarti from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM and for Saptarishi Aarti from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM – arriving 30 minutes before either closure means a wasted slot
  • Book your ₹250 Sugam Darshan pass at shrikashivishwanath.org – up to 45 days in advance; Shravan month and Mahashivratri slots go in hours
  • No mobile phones, cameras, bags, power banks, leather belts or  leather shoes inside the temple complex – free lockers available at all 4 gates, add 30 minutes for deposit/collection
  • There is no “free VIP darshan” – Sugam Darshan costs ₹250 per person officially; anyone offering free priority access is not credible
  • Sparsh Darshan (touching the Jyotirlinga) is a separate, limited booking – different from Sugam Darshan; book 20-30 days ahead on the same portal
  • Dress code: cover shoulders and legs; traditional or semi-formal Indian attire; no shorts, sleeveless or  Western casual wear – clothing available near the gates for ₹100-₹200
  • The Corridor approach from Dashashwamedh Ghat is the easiest route for first-time visitors and elderly pilgrims – no lane confusion
  • Mondays and Saturdays see the heaviest weekday crowds – visit Tuesday to Friday morning for the calmest experience
  • Dev Deepawali in November is Varanasi’s most spectacular event – book accommodation 6 weeks ahead as all ghat-facing hotels sell out
  • Experience My India builds all Varanasi itineraries around these exact crowd and timing realities. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

Frequently Asked Questions – Kashi Vishwanath Temple Varanasi

How to get VIP darshan in Varanasi?

VIP darshan at Kashi Vishwanath is officially called Sugam Darshan and costs ₹250 per person. Book at shrikashivishwanath.org up to 45 days in advance – select your date and time slot, pay online and download the pass. Sugam Darshan gives priority queue access but does not include touching the Jyotirlinga (that requires a separate Sparsh Darshan booking). Experience My India arranges Sugam passes for all tour groups. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

How much time does darshan take at Kashi Vishwanath Temple?

The actual darshan inside the sanctum takes 2 to 5 minutes before the queue moves you forward. Total time including locker deposit, security check, walking the Corridor, waiting in the Sugam queue and locker collection is 60 to 90 minutes with a Sugam pass and 3 to 5 hours in the general queue on busy days. Experience My India plans 2 hours per temple visit to avoid timeline pressure. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

Which month is least crowded at Kashi Vishwanath Temple?

November to February (excluding Dev Deepawali in November and Mahashivratri if it falls in February) sees the lowest crowd levels. Weekday mornings between 5:00 AM and 7:30 AM are the calmest windows in any month. Avoid Shravan month (July-August), Mahashivratri and all Mondays if you want a quicker darshan experience. Experience My India plans all tours around the calmest windows – WhatsApp +91-7302265809 for advice on your specific dates.

Can we visit Kashi Vishwanath Temple without booking?

Yes – general darshan is free and requires no booking. However, the general queue runs 90 minutes to 3 hours on ordinary weekdays and 4 to 6 hours on Mondays, festival days and during Shravan month. Without a ₹250 Sugam Darshan pass, you join this queue. Experience My India strongly recommends booking a Sugam pass in advance – especially for families with children, elderly pilgrims or  visits during peak season. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

What is Sparsh Darshan at Kashi Vishwanath and how is it different?

Sparsh Darshan allows devotees to physically touch the Jyotirlinga – the central Shiva lingam in the inner sanctum. It is a separate, more limited facility from Sugam Darshan (₹250 priority queue). Sparsh Darshan slots are extremely limited, available only on certain days and must be booked 20 to 30 days ahead at shrikashivishwanath.org. Experience My India helps all interested pilgrims monitor and book Sparsh slots. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

What is the Ganga Aarti timing at Dashashwamedh Ghat Varanasi?

The Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat begins at 7:00 PM daily throughout the year and lasts approximately 45 minutes. Seven priests perform the synchronised aarti simultaneously with large multi-flame lamps on the ghat steps. Arrive by 6:30 PM for ghat seating or 6:15 PM for boat seating. Experience My India includes Ganga Aarti boat seats in all standard Varanasi packages. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

Is the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor worth visiting separately?

Yes – the Corridor is itself a pilgrimage experience. It runs approximately 320 metres from Lalita Ghat to the main temple complex, with the golden shikharas visible from the Ganga side for the first time in history. The Corridor also houses a visitor centre, prasad counter and the first clear views of the temple from the river. Experience My India includes a Corridor walk in all Varanasi packages. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

Can senior citizens comfortably visit Kashi Vishwanath Temple?

Yes – with planned support. The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor provides a wheelchair-accessible route from the Ganga side with level paving and ramps – the best approach for elderly pilgrims. The narrow old-city lanes are not wheelchair-accessible. Experience My India provides hotel within 1 km of the Corridor, Sugam pass booking, guide support from hotel to gate and Ganga Aarti boat seating for all elderly pilgrims. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

What is the dress code for Kashi Vishwanath Temple?

Modest, traditional Indian attire is required – cover shoulders and legs fully. Men: kurta-pyjama or full trousers with a shirt. Women: saree, salwar-kameez or  churidar with dupatta. Shorts, sleeveless tops and Western casual wear are not appropriate. Traditional clothing is available from shops near the Corridor entry and Godowlia Chowk for ₹100-₹200. Leather belts and leather shoes must also be removed and deposited at lockers before entry. Experience My India reminds all pilgrims about the dress code 24 hours before their visit day.

How many days are enough for Varanasi?

Two days covers Kashi Vishwanath with morning darshan, Ganga Aarti, Manikarnika Ghat, Kaal Bhairav Temple, Tulsi Manas Mandir and a Ganga sunrise boat ride. Three days adds Sarnath, Ramnagar Fort and a second temple circuit at a relaxed pace. One focused day is possible if you have a Sugam pass and a planned itinerary. Experience My India offers packages from 1 day to 7 days – all built around actual darshan windows. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.
