The most famous places in Varanasi include Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Dashashwamedh Ghat (evening Ganga Aarti), Manikarnika Ghat, Sarnath (10 km away, where Buddha gave his first sermon), Ramnagar Fort and Kal Bhairav Temple – traditionally visited first to seek permission for the pilgrimage. ToggleA City With Over 700 Shrines – Where Do You Even Begin?
Varanasi holds more than 700 ancient shrines and 88 named ghats along the Ganga. For a first-time visitor, this is less a list of places to see and more an entire universe to navigate – which is exactly why most travel guides give you 10 generic names and call it complete.
This guide covers 25 specific famous places in Varanasi, organised by category, with the traditional sequence Braj and Kashi pilgrims actually follow – starting with Kal Bhairav, the guardian deity whose permission is traditionally sought before any Varanasi pilgrimage begins. From there: the sacred ghats, the major temples, heritage landmarks, the five distinct sites within Sarnath and the markets where Varanasi’s craft traditions live on.
I am Gurudutt, born and raised in Braj Bhoomi and founder of Experience My India. Since 2018, our team has guided over 50,000 pilgrims through Varanasi. By the end of this guide you will know exactly which 25 places matter, in what order to visit them, what each costs and how to fit them into 2 or 3 days.
Start Here – Kal Bhairav Temple
Before exploring any of Varanasi’s other 700+ shrines, tradition dictates a visit to Kal Bhairav Temple, dedicated to the fierce guardian deity considered the Kotwal (guardian/protector) of Varanasi. Pilgrims traditionally seek Kal Bhairav’s permission here before beginning their Kashi pilgrimage – visiting other temples first is considered incomplete without this first step.
| Detail | Information |
| Significance | Guardian deity of Varanasi (Kotwal of Kashi) |
| Tradition | Visited first, before other temples |
| Entry | Free |
| Best time | Morning, before the day’s main temple circuit |
Experience My India sequences every Varanasi itinerary starting with Kal Bhairav, exactly as local tradition prescribes. Call +91-7302265809 to plan your visit in the correct order.

The Sacred Ghats (1-8)
1. Dashashwamedh Ghat
The main and most vibrant ghat in Varanasi, famous for the daily evening Ganga Aarti (approximately 6:30-7:00 PM) – seven priests performing a synchronised fire ritual. The single most essential experience in the city.
2. Assi Ghat
At the southern end of the ghat circuit, known for serene sunrise yoga sessions, the Subah-e-Banaras morning programme and popular boat rides departing from 5:30 AM.
3. Manikarnika Ghat
One of Varanasi’s two primary cremation ghats, where fires burn continuously – a profound and direct encounter with Hindu philosophy on death and liberation. Photography is strictly prohibited.
4. Harishchandra Ghat
The second major cremation ghat, named after the legendary King Harishchandra, carrying a quieter and older atmosphere than Manikarnika.
5. Man Mandir Ghat
Home to the historic Jantar Mantar – an 18th-century astronomical observatory built by Maharaja Jai Singh II, positioned directly above the ghat.
6. Darbhanga Ghat
Recognisable by its palace-like architecture, this is among the most photogenic ghats in Varanasi – a favourite for both professional and amateur photographers.
7. Panchganga Ghat
The holy confluence point of five sacred rivers in Hindu tradition – Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati, Kirana and Dhutpapa – making it one of the most theologically significant ghats in the city.
8. Kedar Ghat
Identifiable immediately by its distinctive red-and-white striped steps, adjacent to the historically revered Kedareshwar Temple.

Prominent Temples (9-14)
9. Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple
The holiest and most visited shrine in Varanasi, housing one of the 12 Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva. Open 3:00 AM-11:00 PM with four daily aarti sessions. Security is strict – no phones inside.
10. Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple
A highly revered temple near Banaras Hindu University, founded by the poet-saint Tulsidas, set among old trees with a genuinely peaceful atmosphere away from the central ghat crowds.
11. New Vishwanath Temple (Birla Temple)
A striking white marble structure inside the sprawling BHU campus, with one of the tallest temple towers in India (77 metres). Significantly less crowded than Kashi Vishwanath, with comparable architectural grandeur.
12. Tulsi Manas Temple
Built entirely of white marble, marking the spot where the poet Tulsidas composed the Ramcharitmanas – the Hindi retelling of the Ramayana that remains one of India’s most recited religious texts.
13. Bharat Mata Temple
A genuinely unique temple in all of India – instead of deity statues, it houses a massive relief map of undivided India carved entirely in marble. Built in 1936, inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi.
14. Annapurna Devi Temple
Dedicated to Annapurna, the goddess of food and nourishment, located near Kashi Vishwanath. A significant stop for devotees seeking blessings related to sustenance and prosperity.

Heritage & Cultural Landmarks (15-17)
15. Ramnagar Fort & Museum
An 18th-century sandstone fort on the eastern bank of the Ganga, accessible by boat from Dashashwamedh Ghat (₹100-₹200) or by road via the Rajghat bridge. The royal family’s museum displays vintage cars, weaponry and astronomical clocks. Open 10:00 AM-5:00 PM (closed Friday). Entry: ₹15 (Indian), ₹150 (foreign).
16. Banaras Hindu University (BHU)
A 1,300-acre campus founded in 1916, home to the New Vishwanath Temple and the Bharat Kala Bhavan museum – which holds rare miniature paintings, Gupta-period sculptures and a significant collection of regional artefacts. Open 10:30 AM-4:30 PM (Mon-Sat).
17. Gyan Vapi Well
A historic well immediately adjacent to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple complex, carrying significant religious and historical association with the temple’s centuries-long history.
Sarnath – 5 Sites Worth a Half-Day (18-22)
Sarnath sits approximately 10 km from central Varanasi (20-30 minutes by cab, ₹300-₹400 one way) and is where the Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. The complex contains five distinct sites worth visiting together.
18. Dhamek Stupa
A massive cylindrical stupa standing 128 feet tall, constructed in 500 CE, marking the exact spot of Buddha’s first sermon (the Dhammachakka Pavattana Sutta). The focal point of the entire Sarnath complex.
19. Sarnath Deer Park
A peaceful, lush sanctuary surrounding the main archaeological site – where Buddha’s first disciples are said to have lived and meditated. A genuinely calming contrast to the intensity of central Varanasi.
20. Ashoka Pillar
The polished stone pillar originally erected by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE. The pillar’s lion capital – now housed in the adjacent Sarnath Museum – became independent India’s national emblem.
21. Mulagandhakuti Vihar
A modern temple within the Sarnath complex featuring detailed frescoes depicting the life of the Buddha – a useful visual introduction for visitors unfamiliar with Buddhist iconography.
22. Chinese & Tibetan Temples
Colourful, internationally distinct monasteries near the main Sarnath complex, offering a quieter and culturally different perspective on Buddhism’s presence in modern India.

A historic shopping district known specifically for authentic Banarasi silk sarees and traditional craftsmanship, alongside everyday goods.

Ground Truth – What Nobody Tells You About Varanasi’s Famous Places
After guiding 50,000+ pilgrims through Varanasi since 2018, here is what Experience My India knows that most travel blogs will not say:
Skipping Kal Bhairav Temple is the single most common sequencing mistake first-time visitors make. Most generic “top places” lists never mention it, despite local tradition treating it as the proper starting point for any Kashi pilgrimage. Visitors who go straight to Kashi Vishwanath miss this entirely – it costs nothing extra and takes 20-30 minutes.
Sarnath’s 5 sites genuinely need 2.5-3 hours, not the “quick stop” most day-trip itineraries allow. Many self-planned visitors budget 45 minutes for Sarnath and end up rushing past the Ashoka Pillar’s museum entirely. If history matters to your trip, treat Sarnath as a dedicated half-day, not an add-on.
Kashi Vishwanath’s queue varies from 30 minutes to 3 hours depending purely on day and time – and this single variable affects how much time remains for everything else on your list. Tuesday and Wednesday mornings before 7:00 AM consistently give the shortest queues.
The quieter ghats – Panchganga, Kedar, Darbhanga – are skipped by almost every rushed itinerary, yet offer the calmest and most photogenic experience in the entire ghat circuit. Most visitors only ever see Dashashwamedh and Assi Ghat; the five-river confluence at Panchganga Ghat is genuinely one of the most theologically significant spots in the city and sees a fraction of the crowd.
Banarasi silk authenticity varies enormously between Vishwanath Gali stalls. Walking past the first row of shops and asking specifically for a GI (Geographical Indication) certificate at a slightly deeper shop consistently gets better quality at a fairer price than the first stall a tourist encounters.
Know Before You Go – Famous Places in Varanasi
- Visit Kal Bhairav Temple first – local tradition treats this as the start of any proper Kashi pilgrimage
- No phones inside Kashi Vishwanath – deposit at the cloak room outside
- No photography at Manikarnika or Harishchandra Ghat – strictly enforced and culturally important to respect
- Dress modestly at all temples – shoulders and knees covered; scarves available outside for ₹20-₹50
- Sarnath needs 2.5-3 hours, not a 45-minute stop – budget a half-day if visiting all 5 sites
- Friday closures – both Ramnagar Fort Museum and Sarnath Museum are closed on Fridays; plan accordingly
- Carry small denomination cash – ₹10, ₹20, ₹50 notes for boats, e-rickshaws and market shopping
- Ask for GI certification when buying Banarasi silk – quality and price both improve a few shops deeper into Chowk or Vishwanath Gali

Frequently Asked Questions – Famous Places in Varanasi
The five most essential places in Varanasi are Kashi Vishwanath Temple (one of the 12 Jyotirlingas), Dashashwamedh Ghat (site of the daily evening Ganga Aarti), Manikarnika Ghat (the primary cremation ghat), Sarnath (10 km away, where Buddha gave his first sermon) and Kal Bhairav Temple (traditionally visited first as the guardian deity of Kashi). Experience My India includes all five in every Varanasi package. Call +91-7302265809.
Kashi Vishwanath Temple is the most essential, followed by Kal Bhairav Temple (traditionally visited first), Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple, the New Vishwanath Temple (Birla Temple) at BHU, Tulsi Manas Temple and Annapurna Devi Temple. Together these six temples represent Varanasi’s major Shiva, Hanuman and goddess devotional traditions. Experience My India’s guides sequence temple visits in the correct traditional order. WhatsApp +91-7302265809 for a temple-focused itinerary.
Two days is the recommended minimum, covering Kal Bhairav, Kashi Vishwanath, the main ghats, the Ganga Aarti and a Sarnath half-day. Three days adds Ramnagar Fort, BHU, Bharat Kala Bhavan and the quieter photogenic ghats like Panchganga and Darbhanga. One day is possible but compressed, covering only the essential temple and ghat circuit. Experience My India offers 1, 2 and 3-day packages from ₹1,999. Call +91-7302265809.
Kal Bhairav Temple, dedicated to the guardian deity (Kotwal) of Varanasi, is traditionally visited first – pilgrims seek his permission before beginning the broader Kashi pilgrimage. Only after this is a visit to Kashi Vishwanath Temple and the city’s other 700+ shrines considered properly sequenced. Most generic tourist guides skip this step entirely. Experience My India follows the traditional order on every guided Varanasi tour. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.
Dashashwamedh Ghat is the most famous and most visited ghat in Varanasi, known primarily for the daily evening Ganga Aarti performed by seven priests at approximately 6:30-7:00 PM. Manikarnika Ghat is the most famous cremation ghat. Assi Ghat is known for its sunrise programme. All three together represent the essential ghat experience. Experience My India includes all three in standard Varanasi packages. Call +91-7302265809.
Yes. Sarnath, approximately 10 km from Varanasi, is where Buddha delivered his first sermon and contains five significant sites – the Dhamek Stupa, Sarnath Deer Park, the Ashoka Pillar (whose lion capital is India’s national emblem), Mulagandhakuti Vihar and Chinese/Tibetan temples. Visiting all five takes 2.5 to 3 hours. Experience My India includes Sarnath as a half-day addition in every multi-day Varanasi package. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.
Chowk Market and Vishwanath Gali are the two primary areas for authentic Banarasi silk sarees, ranging from ₹1,500 to ₹25,000+ depending on weave complexity. Ask specifically for GI (Geographical Indication) certification to confirm authenticity – quality and pricing both improve a few shops deeper into the market, away from the first row catering to casual tourists. Experience My India can recommend trusted shops. Call +91-7302265809.
Bharat Mata Temple is unique among Indian temples because it contains no deity statues – instead, a massive marble relief map of undivided India fills the interior. Built in 1936 and inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi, it represents devotion to the nation itself rather than a traditional Hindu deity. Experience My India includes this distinctive stop in 3-day heritage itineraries. WhatsApp +91-7302265809 for the complete heritage circuit.
