A City That Has Been a Pilgrimage Destination for 5,000 Years

Ayodhya is identified in both the Valmiki Ramayana and the Atharva Veda as one of the seven most sacred cities in Hindu tradition. As the birthplace of Lord Ram and the ancient capital of the Raghu dynasty, its 25 most significant sightseeing places span temples, ghats, historical palaces, Mughal-era gardens and inter-faith shrines – making it one of the most architecturally and culturally layered pilgrimage cities in northern India.

Post-2024, Ayodhya has undergone significant infrastructure development around the Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir. New ghats, road improvements and heritage conservation projects have made it significantly more accessible for first-time visitors. But the city’s core pilgrimage sequence – Hanuman Garhi first, then Ram Mandir, then the ghats – remains as relevant as it has been for centuries.

I am Gurudutt, born and raised in Braj Bhoomi and founder of Experience My India. Since 2018, our team has guided over 50,000 pilgrims through Uttar Pradesh’s sacred circuit. By the end of this guide you will know all 25 sightseeing places in Ayodhya, the traditional visit sequence, exact timings and costs and a realistic 1-day or 2-day itinerary.

Start Here – Hanuman Garhi First

By local tradition, Hanuman Garhi is visited before Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir – pilgrims seek Hanuman’s blessings (as Lord Ram’s devoted protector) before proceeding to Ram’s birthplace. This tradition mirrors the Kal Bhairav-first practice in Varanasi and is considered the correct devotional sequence by most Ayodhya-based priests and guides.

Sacred Temples & Shrines (1-9)

1. Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir

The focal point of all sightseeing places in Ayodhya – the monumental temple built on the exact site believed to be Lord Ram’s birthplace. Consecrated in January 2024 and under ongoing construction to complete its full three-storey structure. Entry is free; no phones permitted inside. Security is strict; deposit all devices and bags at cloak rooms before entry.

2. Hanuman Garhi

A massive 52-room temple complex on a hillock, reached via 76 steps. The primary temple inside the fort houses Bal Hanuman (infant Hanuman with Mata Anjani). The climb is steep but short. Visit first, before Ram Mandir – this is the traditional Ayodhya sequence.

3. Kanak Bhawan

A gold-adorned temple palace, said to have been gifted to Goddess Sita by Queen Kaikeyi after the marriage of Sita and Ram. The main shrine houses gold-crowned idols of Ram and Sita. One of the most ornate temple interiors in all of Ayodhya.

4. Nageshvarnath Temple

Believed to be the only temple in Ayodhya established by Kush – the son of Lord Ram – making it the city’s most historically significant Shiva temple. Open daily; active worship throughout the day.

5. Treta Ke Thakur

Houses four exquisite black stone idols carved from a single piece of stone, representing Ram, Sita, Lakshman, Bharat and Shatrughna as they appeared during the Ashwamedha Yajna. A quieter, less-visited but historically significant temple.

6. Dashrath Bhavan

The believed site of King Dashrath’s royal palace, where the sounds of continuous mantra chanting and devotional music create an atmosphere distinctly different from the busier main temples. A more contemplative stop.

7. Janki Mahal

A temple and historic site connected to Goddess Sita (Janki), maintaining continuity with the Ramayana narrative that forms Ayodhya’s spiritual backbone.

8. Sita Ki Rasoi

A temple maintained at the site symbolically representing Goddess Sita’s kitchen in the royal palace – unique in India as a shrine dedicated to this specific domestic-spiritual aspect of the Sita narrative.

9. Bir Sikh (Brahmakund) Temple

A significant religious site on the banks of the Sarayu, associated with the broader devotional fabric of the old Ayodhya city.

Historic Ghats & Cultural Spots (10-13)

10. Ram Ki Paidi

The most significant ghat complex in Ayodhya – a series of 14 beautifully maintained stepped ghats on the Sarayu River, dramatically illuminated for the evening Saryu Aarti. Taking a holy dip in the Sarayu and attending the evening aarti are considered essential Ayodhya experiences. The aarti (approximately 6:30-7:00 PM) rivals Varanasi’s Ganga Aarti in devotional atmosphere, though on a smaller scale.

11. Guptar Ghat

Located approximately 5 km from the city centre, this is the serene, historically significant river crossing where Lord Ram is believed to have taken Jal Samadhi (divine departure from the mortal world). Quieter than Ram Ki Paidi, with an atmosphere of profound peace. Best visited in the morning.

12. Lata Mangeshkar Chowk

A recently developed cultural landmark and traffic circle featuring a giant golden Veena (lute) sculpture, built in memory of Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar. The chowk’s scale and the quality of its evening lighting make it a notable modern Ayodhya landmark.

13. Tulsi Smarak Bhawan

A cultural centre established in memory of poet Goswami Tulsidas, who composed the Ramcharitmanas. Houses a rich library, art displays and hosts Ramlila performances. Of particular interest to visitors interested in Ayodhya’s literary and cultural heritage.

Heritage & Nature (14-18)

14. Gulab Bari

An 18th-century Mughal-Awadhi monument – the tomb complex of Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula, featuring striking rose gardens and architecture that blends Mughal symmetry with Awadhi ornamentation. This is Ayodhya’s most significant heritage site from the Islamic period, offering a different architectural dimension from the Hindu temple circuit.

15. Mani Parvat

An ancient hillock containing a Buddhist stupa from the Mauryan era, visible from a distance. The hillock also carries Hindu pilgrimage associations, making it a site of historical layering.

16. Sugriv Parvat

Adjacent to Mani Parvat, this hillock carries Ramayana-era associations with Sugriv, the ally king. A small hilltop temple with Saryu River views.

17. Ram Katha Museum

An informative museum housing artefacts, paintings and scriptures that document the cultural history of Ayodhya and the Ramayana tradition. Well-suited to visitors interested in understanding the historical context of the city beyond the temples.

18. Ram Katha Park

A large open-air park and auditorium used for major religious discourses, Ramlila performances and cultural events – particularly active during Ram Navami and Deepotsav (Diwali).

Jain, Buddhist & Sikh Shrines (19-21)

Ayodhya is one of the few cities in India where significant sites from four major religious traditions coexist within a small geographic area. These inter-faith sites are often skipped by purely temple-focused pilgrims – and they add genuine depth to the Ayodhya experience.

19. Rishabhadeo Jain Temple (Swarg Dwar)

Ayodhya holds special significance in Jainism as the birthplace of Lord Rishabhadeva, the first Tirthankara – making it a Jain tirth (pilgrimage site) as well as a Hindu sacred city. The Rishabhadeo Jain Temple is the primary Jain site.

20. Gurudwara Nazarbaug (Brahm Kund)

An important Sikh shrine established to commemorate the visits of Guru Nanak Dev and Guru Tegh Bahadur to Ayodhya. Both visits are documented in the Sikh tradition and make Ayodhya significant in Sikh sacred geography.

21. Buddhist Sites – Mani Parvat Stupa

The Mauryan-era stupa at Mani Parvat is Ayodhya’s primary Buddhist heritage site, confirming the city’s historical importance across the full sweep of Indian religious history.

New Developments – Post-2024 Ayodhya (22-25)

The Ram Janmabhoomi consecration in January 2024 triggered a significant wave of infrastructure development that has created several new landmarks worth visiting:

22. Ram Mandir Complex – New Pathways and Pradakshina Marg

The newly constructed circumambulation pathways around the Ram Janmabhoomi complex, with landscaped gardens and seating areas that did not exist before 2024.

23. Saryu Riverfront Development

New ghats, improved walking promenades and evening illumination along the Sarayu River have transformed the Ram Ki Paidi experience significantly. The Saryu corridor now extends further in both directions from the main ghat complex.

24. Deepotsav Venue – Ram Ki Paidi Festival Ground

The Ram Ki Paidi ghat complex becomes a world-record venue for lamp-lighting during Deepotsav (Diwali in Ayodhya) – when over 25 lakh diyas (clay lamps) are lit simultaneously. If your visit coincides with Diwali, this is a genuinely rare experience.

25. Ayodhya Dham Railway Station

The newly redeveloped Ayodhya Dham Railway Station – a grand station built with temple-inspired architecture – is itself a significant visual experience for train arrivals, distinct from any other station in India.

Experience My India recommendation: For a 1-day visit, hotels near Ram Ki Paidi give both ghat access and manageable proximity to the main temples. Ground Truth – What Nobody Tells You About Ayodhya Sightseeing

After guiding 50,000+ pilgrims through India’s sacred cities since 2018, here is what Experience My India knows that most travel blogs will not say:

The Ram Janmabhoomi queue on weekends, Ram Navami and Diwali can be 2-4 hours. Weekday mornings before 9:00 AM are consistently the shortest queues. If your Ayodhya visit is on a Sunday or festival day, budget the entire morning for just the Ram Mandir.

Hanuman Garhi’s 76 steps are steeper than they look and come before the main temple in the traditional sequence. Most generic “top 10 Ayodhya” lists mention the step count as a curiosity. The honest visitor note: for elderly pilgrims or those with knee concerns, the steps are challenging and should be assessed before the day’s itinerary is fixed. Experience My India adjusts Hanuman Garhi access for groups with mobility concerns.

Guptar Ghat is 5 km from the city centre – it requires a separate, dedicated trip. Most visitors who plan to combine it with their main temple circuit run out of time or add 45-60 minutes to an already full day. We recommend visiting Guptar Ghat as the first stop of the morning before the main city circuit begins, or as a separate afternoon visit.

Post-2024 Ayodhya is significantly more developed but also more crowded than ever before. The January 2024 Ram Mandir consecration brought a 5-10x increase in weekly visitor numbers. Infrastructure has improved enormously, but accommodation and restaurant booking requires more lead time than before – especially for festival periods.

Frequently Asked Questions – Sightseeing Places in Ayodhya

What are the main tourist places in Ayodhya?

The five most essential sightseeing places in Ayodhya are Hanuman Garhi (visit first, by tradition), Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir (the birthplace temple), Kanak Bhawan (gold-adorned palace temple), Ram Ki Paidi Ghats (Saryu Aarti at 6:30 PM) and Nageshvarnath Temple. A complete Ayodhya itinerary also includes Dashrath Bhavan, Sita Ki Rasoi, Guptar Ghat and Gulab Bari. Experience My India includes all of these in every Ayodhya package. Call +91-7302265809.

Which location is best to stay in Ayodhya?

For first-time pilgrims, hotels near Ram Ki Paidi Ghats offer the best balance – walking access to the Saryu Aarti and manageable proximity to the main temples. Hotels directly adjacent to Ram Janmabhoomi are in high demand after 2024 and book out quickly for festival periods. The Sadar/city centre area gives the widest accommodation range. Experience My India recommends hotels based on your priority temples. WhatsApp +91-7302265809 for current availability.

What to visit first in Ayodhya?

Hanuman Garhi should be visited first – by tradition, pilgrims seek Hanuman’s blessings before entering Ram Janmabhoomi, as Hanuman is considered the guardian deity of Lord Ram. This sequence is followed by local priests and guides and is considered the devotionally correct order. After Hanuman Garhi (allow 45-60 minutes for the 76-step climb and darshan), proceed to Ram Janmabhoomi. Experience My India follows this sequence on every guided Ayodhya tour. Call +91-7302265809.

How to spend 2 days in Ayodhya?

Day 1: Guptar Ghat (sunrise) → Hanuman Garhi → Ram Janmabhoomi → Kanak Bhawan → Nageshvarnath → Saryu Aarti at Ram Ki Paidi. Day 2: Gulab Bari → Mani Parvat + Sugriv Parvat → Ram Katha Museum → Tulsi Smarak Bhawan → Lata Mangeshkar Chowk → Gurudwara Nazarbaug → Rishabhadeo Jain Temple → Treta Ke Thakur. How much time is needed to see Ayodhya?

One full day covers the essential places – Hanuman Garhi, Ram Janmabhoomi, Kanak Bhawan, Nageshvarnath, Dashrath Bhavan and the Ram Ki Paidi Saryu Aarti. Two days adds the heritage circuit (Gulab Bari, Mani Parvat, Ram Katha Museum) and the inter-faith sites (Jain, Sikh, Buddhist). Guptar Ghat is best visited as a separate 1-hour morning excursion. Experience My India offers both 1-day and 2-day Ayodhya packages from ₹1,999 per person. Call +91-7302265809.

What is the best time to visit Ayodhya?

October to March is the best season – pleasant temperatures (5°C-28°C), all temples and ghats accessible and major festivals including Ram Navami (April), Deepotsav (Diwali) and Navratri fall within or just outside this window. Ram Navami (April 2026) and Deepotsav are spectacular but very crowded – book 2-3 months ahead. Weekday mornings year-round give the shortest temple queues. Experience My India runs tours throughout the year. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

Can I do Ayodhya in one day from Lucknow or Varanasi?

Yes. Lucknow to Ayodhya is approximately 135 km (2-2.5 hours by cab). Varanasi to Ayodhya is approximately 200 km (3-4 hours). A same-day Ayodhya visit from Lucknow is comfortable – depart by 6:30 AM, arrive by 9:00 AM, complete the main circuit by 7:00 PM, return to Lucknow by 9:30 PM. From Varanasi, an overnight stay in Ayodhya is recommended. Experience My India arranges both. Call +91-7302265809.
