Most pilgrims arrive in Ayodhya for Ram Mandir and leave the same day. What they miss is the broader circuit – a ring of sacred, historical and culturally rich destinations that turn a two-day Ram Mandir visit into a five-day North India pilgrimage that genuinely covers what this region has to offer.
I am Gurudutt, born and raised in Braj Bhoomi and the founder of Experience My India. Since 2018, I have planned 50,000+ pilgrimages across the North India sacred circuit – Ayodhya, Varanasi, Prayagraj and the Buddhist sites of Eastern Uttar Pradesh. This guide is built from that direct experience.
By the end of this guide you will have a clear master table of all 15 Ayodhya nearby places with distances, routes and travel times; themed day-trip frameworks; specific attraction lists for each major destination; and a structured itinerary for combining Ayodhya with the three destinations most pilgrims add to their circuit: Varanasi, Prayagraj and Lucknow.

Within 100 km: Same-Day Ayodhya Nearby Places
These four destinations are reachable and returnable within a single day from Ayodhya, making them ideal additions to a longer Ayodhya stay or as buffer days in a multi-city North India circuit.
Gonda – 45 km (1 hour via NH27) Gonda is the closest significant destination from Ayodhya – an easy 45-minute drive north. The primary pilgrimage draw is Swaminarayan Chhapaiya, the birthplace of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, founder of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sampraday. For devotees of the Swaminarayan tradition, this is a destination of the highest significance. The Parvati Aranga Wildlife Sanctuary nearby adds a nature dimension for families or non-pilgrimage travellers.
Basti – 75 km (1.5 hours via NH27) Basti is a historically significant town with sites connected to the 1857 uprising. The Bhadeshwar Nath Temple and the Aonla Forest reserve are the primary draws. For pilgrims specifically, the temple is the reason to visit; for history-focused travellers, the 1857-era historical sites provide context for this region’s significance in India’s independence movement.
Sultanpur – 95 km (2 hours via NH330) Sultanpur works particularly well as a pitstop between Ayodhya and Prayagraj. Dhopa Pahar is a scenic viewpoint; the Mahavir Ji Temple serves Jain pilgrims. Sultanpur also offers a convenient mid-route break if you are planning the Ayodhya-Prayagraj leg by road.
Amethi – 100 km (2 hours via NH330A) Amethi is known for its handloom weaving villages – of interest to visitors interested in traditional Uttar Pradesh textile culture – and the historic Hanumangarhi Temple in the town centre.

100-200 km: Half-Day & Full-Day Trips from Ayodhya
Lucknow – 135 km (3-3.5 hours via NH27) Lucknow is the most complete half-day or overnight addition to an Ayodhya trip. The Nawab-era architecture – Bara Imambara, Chota Imambara, Rumi Darwaza – gives Lucknow a visual distinctiveness found nowhere else in Uttar Pradesh. Hazratganj is the main commercial and food street; Tunday Kababi and Lucknaw’s distinctive Awadhi cuisine are worth planning a meal around. If you are spending a night in Lucknow between Ayodhya and a further destination, the city rewards a full evening walk through the old city lanes.
Gorakhpur – 140 km (3 hours via NH27) Gorakhpur holds significance for multiple traditions simultaneously. The Gorakhnath Temple – one of the most active Shaiva centres in North India – draws thousands daily. Gita Press, located in the city, is one of the world’s largest publishers of Hindu religious texts – the book shop is a destination in itself for devotional readers. The Railway Museum is a genuine attraction for families with children.
Rae Bareli – 130 km (2.5-3 hours via NH330A) Samaspur Bird Sanctuary near Rae Bareli is one of Uttar Pradesh’s best-maintained bird reserves – over 250 species observed, with winter months (November to February) being the peak birding season. Jahanabad Fort offers historical exploration. Rae Bareli works well for travellers who want to break the Ayodhya-Prayagraj journey without rushing.
Pratapgarh – 125 km (2.5 hours via NH330A) Pratapgarh sits directly on the Ayodhya-Prayagraj highway route. The Bela Bhawani Temple and Haudeswar Mahadev Temple (Kunda) are the main pilgrimage stops. For most Ayodhya-Prayagraj road travellers, Pratapgarh is a natural 30 to 45-minute stop rather than a standalone destination.
Varanasi – The Sacred City 220 km from Ayodhya
Varanasi is the most common next destination after Ayodhya for North India pilgrims – and rightly so. The two cities together form the natural pilgrimage axis of eastern Uttar Pradesh: Ayodhya for Ram, Varanasi for Shiva.
Distance: 220 km from Ayodhya Route: Purvanchal Expressway (fastest – approximately 4.5 hours) or NH330 via Sultanpur and Jaunpur Travel time: 4.5 to 5 hours by car
Key Varanasi attractions to plan:
- Kashi Vishwanath Temple – the primary pilgrimage draw; Sugam Darshan E-pass recommended (free, at online.srjbtkshetra.org)
- Kal Bhairav Temple – visit before Kashi Vishwanath by tradition (Kal Bhairav is Kashi’s gatekeeper)
- Dashashwamedh Ghat – Ganga Aarti at approximately 6:45 PM in summer, 5:45 PM in winter
- Manikarnika Ghat – Varanasi’s ancient cremation ghat; open 24/7, no photography
- Sarnath – 12 km from Varanasi city centre; the site of the Buddha’s first sermon
Recommended duration from Ayodhya: 2 days minimum for a meaningful Varanasi experience. Experience My India’s Ayodhya Varanasi 3-Day Package covers both cities properly.
Prayagraj – Sangam City 165 km from Ayodhya
Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad) is 165 km south of Ayodhya via NH330, making it a 4-hour road journey and the most significant sacred addition to any Ayodhya pilgrimage.
Distance: 165 km Route: NH330 south from Ayodhya; Pratapgarh and Sultanpur are en-route stops Travel time: 3.5 to 4 hours
Key Prayagraj attractions:
- Triveni Sangam – the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythological Saraswati. Boat ride from Sangam ghat is the primary experience; shared boats ₹50-₹100 per person, private boats ₹400-₹600.
- Allahabad Fort (Akbar’s Fort) – a 16th-century Mughal fortress on the Yamuna bank; partially open to visitors
- Anand Bhavan – the Nehru family home, now a museum; significant for modern Indian history
- Bade Hanuman Temple – a reclining Hanuman idol below the fort, considered sacred at Sangam
Recommended duration from Ayodhya: 1 to 2 days. If combining Prayagraj with Varanasi, travel south from Ayodhya via Prayagraj (3.5 hours), then east to Varanasi (2 hours) – a smooth linear circuit.
Experience My India can combine Ayodhya, Prayagraj and Varanasi into a single 4 to 5 day itinerary. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.
Naimisharanya – The Forest Pilgrimage 180 km from Ayodhya
Naimisharanya is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas and one of the most historically significant pilgrimage sites in Hindu tradition – considered the place where the Puranas were first recited by Suta Goswami to the assembled sages.
Distance: 180 km from Ayodhya Route: NH27 toward Lucknow, then via SH25 toward Sitapur and Naimisharanya Travel time: 4 hours
Key Naimisharanya attractions:
- Chakratirth – a sacred circular pool said to be created by Brahma’s discus; considered especially sacred for ancestor-rites
- Dadhichi Kund – associated with sage Dadhichi’s self-sacrifice
- Lalita Devi Temple – Shakti Peetha; one of the most revered goddesses in the region
- Vyasa Gaddi – the seat where Veda Vyasa compiled the Mahabharata
Naimisharanya is significantly less visited than Varanasi or Prayagraj, which makes it one of the most peaceful pilgrimage stops in the entire region. Experience My India includes Naimisharanya in extended North India circuit packages. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.
Buddhist Circuit: Shravasti (190 km) & Kushinagar (225 km)
For travellers on the Buddhist circuit of Uttar Pradesh, Ayodhya serves as a natural hub for reaching both Shravasti and Kushinagar.
Shravasti – 190 km northeast of Ayodhya
- Route: NH27 toward Gonda, then NH730 to Shravasti
- Travel time: 4 to 4.5 hours
- Key sites: Jetavana Monastery (where the Buddha spent many rainy seasons), Ananda Bodhi Tree (one of the oldest fig trees in India), Sobhanath Temple
- Significance: Shravasti is one of the six great cities of the Buddha’s time; the Jetavana Monastery is the second most visited Buddhist pilgrimage site after Bodh Gaya
Kushinagar – 225 km northeast of Ayodhya
- Route: NH27 via Gorakhpur (140 km), then continue to Kushinagar
- Travel time: 5 hours
- Key sites: Mahaparinirvana Temple (reclining Buddha statue marking the site of the Buddha’s passing), Ramabhar Stupa (cremation site), Buddha Museum
- Significance: The site of the Buddha’s Mahaparinirvana – one of the four most sacred Buddhist sites in India
The Shravasti-Kushinagar-Gorakhpur circuit from Ayodhya makes a natural 2-day Buddhist heritage trip from the city. Experience My India can plan this as a standalone circuit or as part of a broader North India pilgrimage itinerary. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.
Ayodhya Itself – Temples & Sights You Must Not Miss
Before planning the broader circuit, the Ayodhya local sightseeing plan should be complete – and most pilgrims underestimate how much time the city itself requires.
| Ayodhya Sight | Timings | Entry | Time Needed |
| Shri Ram Janmabhoomi (Ram Mandir) | 7:00 AM-11:30 AM; 2:00 PM-7:00 PM | Free (Sugam E-pass recommended) | 1.5-3 hours |
| Hanuman Garhi | 5:00 AM-11:30 AM; 4:00 PM-10:00 PM | Free | 1 hour |
| Kanak Bhawan | 8:00 AM-11:30 AM; 4:30 PM-9:30 PM | Free | 45 min |
| Ram Ki Paidi (Saryu Ghat) | All day; Aarti at sunset | Free | 1 hour |
| Dashrath Mahal | Morning & evening | Free | 30 min |
| Sita Ki Rasoi | Morning | Free | 30 min |
| Ram Katha Park | Day | Free | 45 min |
Experience My India’s Ayodhya sequencing: Hanuman Garhi first (tradition requires Hanuman’s blessing before Ram Mandir), then Ram Janmabhoomi morning darshan, then Kanak Bhawan evening darshan, then Saryu Ghat Aarti. This complete sequence takes a full day minimum. View the 2-Day Ayodhya Package
Ground Truth – What Nobody Tells You
The Purvanchal Expressway to Varanasi is significantly faster than NH330 – by 45 to 60 minutes. Most generic guides list NH330 as the Ayodhya-Varanasi route. The Purvanchal Expressway, once accessible via the NH27 exit, covers the same 220 km in approximately 4.5 hours versus 5 to 5.5 hours on NH330. Experience My India uses the Expressway for all Ayodhya-Varanasi transfers.
Prayagraj’s Sangam requires 2 to 3 hours on its own, not 45 minutes. Most day-trip itineraries that add Prayagraj as a pitstop allocate an hour at the Sangam. In practice, finding a boat, navigating to the confluence point, completing the riverbank ritual and returning takes 2 to 3 hours. Treat Prayagraj as a separate half-day minimum.
Naimisharanya is one of the most spiritually significant sites in all of North India – and almost no tour operators include it. The site where the Puranas were first recited is largely absent from standard Ayodhya pilgrimage packages. Experience My India includes it in extended 5-day circuits for serious yatris.
Lucknow to Ayodhya in 3.5 hours via NH27 is a consistent road – no major congestion points. Unlike Delhi-Agra or Delhi-Mathura corridors, the NH27 Lucknow-Ayodhya stretch is largely free of urban congestion bottlenecks between cities. Most travellers report the actual drive time matching the Maps estimate on this route.
Combining Ayodhya, Varanasi and Prayagraj in two days is possible but rushed. The triangle covers 385 km of driving on three different roads. Two days gives you one session in each city – which may be sufficient for a darshan-focused pilgrim but leaves little room for the Ganga Aarti, the Sangam boat and Sarnath all in the same 48-hour window.
FAQ – Ayodhya Nearby Places
The best Ayodhya nearby places include Gonda (45 km, Swaminarayan birthplace), Lucknow (135 km, Nawab-era architecture and Awadhi cuisine), Prayagraj (165 km, Triveni Sangam), Naimisharanya (180 km, ancient pilgrimage forest), Varanasi (220 km, Kashi Vishwanath and Ganga Aarti) and the Buddhist circuit via Shravasti (190 km) and Kushinagar (225 km). The best approach to Ayodhya depends on your starting city. From Lucknow: NH27, 135 km, 3-3.5 hours – smooth multi-lane highway throughout. From Delhi: NH27 via Lucknow, approximately 560 km, 8-9 hours; or fly to Maharishi Valmiki International Airport (Ayodhya) with direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. From Varanasi: Purvanchal Expressway, 220 km, 4.5 hours – the fastest route. Experience My India coordinates all pickup routes for guided Ayodhya tours. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.
Ayodhya’s main sightseeing list within the city itself covers 7 to 8 primary sites: Ram Janmabhoomi (Ram Mandir), Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan, Saryu Ghat (Ram Ki Paidi), Dashrath Mahal, Sita Ki Rasoi, Ram Katha Park and the Saryu River Aarti. A focused 2-day itinerary covers all of these properly. Experience My India’s 2-Day Ayodhya Package covers every site in the right sequence and timing. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.
The most natural next destinations after Ayodhya are Varanasi (220 km, 4.5 hrs via Purvanchal Expressway – Kashi Vishwanath and Ganga Aarti), Prayagraj (165 km, 4 hrs via NH330 – Triveni Sangam and Allahabad Fort) or Lucknow (135 km, 3.5 hrs via NH27 – Nawab-era architecture and Awadhi food). The Ayodhya-Prayagraj-Varanasi triangle is the most popular extended North India pilgrimage circuit. Experience My India offers the 3-day Ayodhya Varanasi Package from ₹8,999. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.
A one-day round trip from Ayodhya to Varanasi is technically possible (220 km each way via Purvanchal Expressway) but leaves only 4 to 5 hours in Varanasi after accounting for travel time – barely enough for Kashi Vishwanath darshan and the Ganga Aarti. Experience My India strongly recommends a minimum 2-day Varanasi stay for a meaningful experience. The 3-Day Ayodhya Varanasi Package from ₹8,99 covers both cities with an overnight in Varanasi included. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.
Lucknow is approximately 135 km from Ayodhya via NH27 – a journey of 3 to 3.5 hours by car under normal traffic. The NH27 highway between the two cities is multi-lane and well-maintained throughout, with no significant urban congestion bottlenecks between them. Experience My India offers Lucknow to Ayodhya cab transfers as part of all Ayodhya pilgrimage packages. WhatsApp +91-7302265809 for a confirmed fare.
Naimisharanya is one of Hinduism’s most ancient pilgrimage sites – 180 km from Ayodhya – traditionally identified as the forest where the 18 Puranas were first narrated by Suta Goswami to the assembled sages. It contains Chakratirth (a sacred pool), Dadhichi Kund and a Shakti Peetha (Lalita Devi Temple). It is relatively uncrowded compared to Varanasi or Prayagraj and offers one of the most contemplative pilgrimage experiences in Uttar Pradesh. Experience My India includes it in extended 5-day Ayodhya circuit packages.
Yes – Prayagraj is 165 km from Ayodhya (4 hours via NH330) and offers the Triveni Sangam, the Allahabad Fort and the Bade Hanuman Temple at the riverbank. The Sangam boat ride to the confluence point is a significant pilgrimage experience. Prayagraj also serves as a natural midpoint between Ayodhya and Varanasi on a linear North India circuit. Experience My India plans the Ayodhya-Prayagraj-Varanasi triangle as a 4 to 5 day itinerary. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.
